About The Position

The Water Systems Operator is responsible for the safe, environmentally sound and efficient daily operation of the “demineralized” water system, waste water system, treated water system and cooling towers. Collects, tests and analyzes water samples in various treatment and process streams. Maintains various laboratory operations that taken together supports overall facility operations in the areas of makeup and waste water treatment. The Water Systems Operator shall follow established operating procedures and does not deviate from these procedures during normal operating conditions except as directed. The Water Systems Operator is independently responsible through the Operations Manager and supporting the Shift Supervisor to ensure that all water chemistry needs for the power plant are met either directly or, through previously scheduled support resources from the Operations Group.

Requirements

  • Must have a sound knowledge and clear understanding of water chemistry principles and the systems/equipment that are defined by the water chemistry responsibilities at the facility.
  • Must have a broad knowledge in the technical field of water chemistry that has been gained through experiential means or through completion of two years of college in the form of a relevant Associates degree.
  • Must have a high school education or equivalent and must have completed PBRRC’s operator training program requirements for the position, or must have had equivalent power plant work-related experience.
  • Must have successfully completed both an oral and written review to ensure that he or she is qualified to accept and assume the responsibilities of the position
  • Must be able to read, write and verbally communicate in English.
  • Must be able to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as some statistical and algebraic calculations.
  • Must have the ability to follow broad instructions, objectives and policies.
  • Must have the ability to exercise considerable initiative, and independent, analytical and evaluative judgement.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb
  • Ability to lift/carry 50lbs
  • Ability to work from heights and in confined spaces
  • Qualify to wear a full-face respirator
  • Consistently work in various weather conditions

Responsibilities

  • Performs boiler, make-up water, closed cooling water, circulating water and waste water chemical tests and takes appropriate action to maintain system within prescribed limits.
  • Operates and will be the subject matter expert in the make-up water, neutralization and other water treatment systems.
  • Receive deliveries of facility chemicals.
  • Generates data through sample analyses or sample results compilation through the DCS for use by the Operations Shift Supervisor and other interested parties.
  • Provides operations based evaluations and recommendations for power plant operations as relates to water chemistry affected systems, and components.
  • Coordinates all calibration activities for laboratory instruments and installed instruments via close cooperation with Operations and Maintenance Supervision.
  • Troubleshoots water system and chemical treatment problems.
  • Cross trains shift operators as appropriate.
  • Maintains laboratory reagent stock.
  • Performs quality control over all laboratory functions, i.e. shift operator check chemistry, training, and periodic audit water chemistry area functionality and readiness.
  • Serves as the chief safety officer for chemical control within the Operations Group.
  • Performs troubleshooting on related systems, components and/or equipment and reports all malfunctioning equipment through the issuance of work orders.
  • Performs checks as required by the weekly activities book, the monthly critical items check list, etc. as assigned.
  • Performs lockout and tag out of equipment in support of operations and/or maintenance activities.
  • Maintains clean and orderly work areas.
  • Performs additional tasks as directed by the Operations Manager, or his or her designee.
  • Ensures that all water chemistry rounds are complete and data is entered in the required systems.
