About The Position

Under supervision, monitor, control, and take charge of the water distribution system; monitor wastewater collection system on an assigned shift; direct field distribution operations; perform minor mechanical maintenance; operate computer-based control system. Receive calls and dispatch appropriate personnel; complete other related work as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Texas Drivers License, Class C, required.
  • Must have, or obtain within one year of appointment, a Class C Water Distribution License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
  • One year experience in water production, distribution, or treatment required.
  • Knowledge required of: pump production (million gallons per day) individually and combination; pressure zones and their boundaries and how water can be transferred from one zone to another zone; the terminology used in water pump operation.
  • Must have abilities to: monitor charts and gauges, and correctly interpret and react to those interpretations; learn the characteristics of each pump station.
  • Must have ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have knowledge of dispatch, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, control and maintenance of water distribution systems and wastewater systems.
  • Must be able to implement safe work practices.
  • Must have abilities to: think and act quickly in emergencies; judge situations accurately; and dispatch appropriate personnel under normal and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to: read and interpret various diagrams, devices and computer- generated data; maintain accurate records, maps and status boards.
  • Must be able to prepare reports, effectively communicate in person, via telephone, radio, and in writing.
  • Good written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Must be able to: follow oral and written directions; operate computer-based equipment; and work on feet for up to eight hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional accredited training courses in water operations preferred.
  • One year of experience preferred in the operation of pumps, motors, and associated equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, control, and operate the water distribution system; monitor wastewater collection system.
  • Operate the SCADA and Security systems.
  • Monitor graphs to interpret and react to the distribution system and determine when a pump, or combination of pumps need to be started or stopped.
  • Monitor rate of flow meters, record readings and production on log sheets.
  • Monitor pump operation and record any abnormal trends, demands, or operations.
  • Prepare daily operational reports.
  • Maintain shift logs, receive calls, and dispatch appropriate personnel.
  • Operate various types of computer equipment.
  • Work in a confined area for 8+ hours and remain seated for long periods of time entering data into various computer systems.
  • Assist in training other operators.
  • Collect various water samples as required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
  • Enter job requests and work orders for utility, street, facility and solid waste operations.
  • Keep facility clean while operating shift.
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with other city employees, officials, and the public.
  • Read, write (by hand), hear and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Walk and carry, drag, lift, hold, pull and/or push up to 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Climb crawl, drive, kneel, sit, squat, stand, twist, walk, and stoop.
  • Sort various materials.
  • Work in various extreme conditions; cold, heat, temperature swings, noise, outdoors, indoors and confined spaces, using proper safety precautions as needed.
  • Work around some mechanical, electrical hazards, odors and dust, using proper safety precautions.
  • Wear and properly use safety equipment.
  • Drive to water sampling sites selected by TCEQ and to various other testing locations when conducting field tests.
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance of facilities.
