About The Position

The RWA Water Science Educator assists in the teaching and development of the Regional Water Authority’s (RWA) Water Science Education Programs. The programs are available free of charge to any school and organization within our 20-town service area. Since 1990, our education programs have reached over 390,000 students. This role is responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining high-quality educational programs that promote student and community engagement. The position involves outreach, scheduling, program development, and collaboration with schools and internal departments to foster awareness of water science and careers in the water industry. Please note: This role may be offered on a part-time or full-time basis, subject to the candidate’s availability and preference.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, natural resources or another appropriate field.
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience in teaching school-aged children.
  • Enjoys working with children (K-12).
  • Excellent time management and punctuality.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Able to effectively and accurately manage a dynamic teaching schedule.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Valid Connecticut Driver’s License.
  • Experience using laptop computers and mobile devices.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a strategic plan to enhance the distribution of program brochures and increase student participation in educational programs.
  • Schedule and present educational programs in school classrooms and at the Water Center.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date Outlook calendar with class schedules and program details.
  • Develop, implement, and revise lesson plans and activities to align with educational standards and teacher needs.
  • Ensure all equipment and materials are properly maintained and available for program delivery.
  • Innovate and update existing programs to reflect changes in material.
  • Coordinate the scheduling, delivery, and pickup of Water Science Loan Boxes.
  • Maintain a current Outlook calendar and Excel spreadsheet to track loan box logistics.
  • Deliver and retrieve loan boxes from schools and partner organizations.
  • Inspect, restock, and prepare loan boxes for future use after each loan period.
  • Update the Microsoft Access database with program and loan box data to support confirmation letters and monthly reporting requirements.
  • Create and implement a curriculum focused on careers in the water industry for high school students.
  • Collaborate with HR and recruiting teams to gather relevant career information.
  • Partner with high school career counselors to tailor programming to student needs.
  • Support existing initiatives such as Junior Achievement and Career Camp programs at the RWA.
  • Organize and lead tours of water treatment plants for high school groups.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the education program and advance the strategic initiatives, mission, vision, and values of the RWA.
