About The Position

The Wooten Company’s Columbia, SC office is seeking a team-focused, innovative Water Resources Practice Manager with strong water / wastewater utilities background to lead our expanding Water Resources Practice in South Carolina. What will you be doing? Candidates can expect to work with utility owners, such as local municipalities and utility authorities, in the delivery of critical water and sewer services. The person in this role can make a significant community impact by supporting our clients as they carry out their mission to efficiently own, operate, and maintain public utilities on behalf of their customers and residents. In this role, the Water Resources Practice Manager will be responsible for growing and managing their own team, working with existing clients, and growing Wooten’s water / wastewater utilities presence in South Carolina. Candidates can expect to be continually challenged to independently manage design projects (i.e. develop scopes, budgets, maintain client relationships, QC and design functions, etc.) and help develop and lead their own team of colleagues to create solutions that meet our client’s needs, using the right mix of advanced technology and historically successful measures, while working within the financial boundaries of the project stakeholders. Who will you be working with? The Water Resources Practice Manager can expect cross-functional collaboration across all teams and specialties, providing an opportunity to interact with The Wooten Company colleagues in both North and South Carolina, including our Water/ Wastewater teams in other offices. Additionally, this person will regularly work with municipal and private clients, as well as state and federal regulatory and funding agencies. For the right person with a desire to grow professionally, this role is a good opportunity to develop both depth and breadth in civil engineering expertise while contributing to Wooten’s expanding presence, in both the North and South Carolina regions. Where will you be working? This position will be located in the Columbia, SC office. Conveniently nestled downtown, the local area is filled with restaurants and nightlife, unique shops, art galleries and studios, and convenient apartments and condominium living. The Wooten Company also has 5 other offices located in Raleigh, Wilmington, Winston-Salem, Greenville, and Hickory, NC. Who are you? The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated civil or environmental engineer (PE) with a strong background in successfully completing water, wastewater and / or stormwater projects for local governments and private clients. You have been a licensed Professional Engineer for at least 10 years. You are responsible, work well with a team and communicate well with people of varying backgrounds and experiences. You are eager grow professionally in your field and help The Wooten Company grow our presence in South Carolina in the municipal water resources field.

Requirements

  • B.S. Civil/ Environmental Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Professional Engineer (PE) in a consulting engineering environment
  • SC licensed Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 3 years of project management experience preferred
  • Previous supervisory and management experience preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (O365) applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • A foundational knowledge of Project Management techniques, and a desire to expand these skills
  • Strong experience with engineering design and construction administration for municipal utility projects
  • Familiarity with federal, state and local agency regulations, primarily concerning municipal water and wastewater treatment plant projects
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present to clients and plan/conduct meetings
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train employees to reach the common goals of the practice, office and company
  • Ability to travel, with some overnight stays, as required
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with public infrastructure project financing and SCDOT is a plus.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling and with Civil 3D is preferred
  • Strong understanding of engineering project process from inception to completion through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate and oversee business development, marketing and strategic for the practice in the regional office.
  • Take an active role in the participation of proposals including development of work, schedules, fees and overall content.
  • Supervise, monitor and maintain effective client liaisons and relationships; serve as the primary client contact for water/wastewater clients in South Carolina.
  • Routinely network in the community/ South Carolina to improve the presence and schedules, conduct project meetings, monitor and pursue accounts receivables, and prepare project invoices.
  • Proactively engage in the development of new business, with a focus on existing clients.
  • Direct and provide technical assistance and oversight into the following: Preliminary engineering reports and studies, Preparation and review of necessary engineering calculations and modeling, Prepare construction and bidding documents, Project permitting and funding application preparation
  • Perform QA/QC functions to help ensure projects meet client expectations and engineering excellence.
  • Development of cost opinions
  • Direct and supervise staff activities withing the practice including hires, terminations, mentorships, performance reviews and conflict resolution.
  • Consult with project team to provide technical guidance; outline work plan; assign duties and responsibilities; and resolve problems.
