About The Position

The Water Resources Engineering Intern position at AtkinsRéalis offers college students pursuing a degree in a STEM field the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of hydraulics and hydrology. Interns will work on coding and tool development, focusing on Python-based solutions for flood hazard and risk management, while collaborating with a team to support floodplain mapping and risk assessment.

Requirements

  • Experience or coursework in Python programming and GIS applications is highly preferred.
  • Must have completed at least 60 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, or a computer science/engineering degree with knowledge of hydraulics and hydrology, by the start of the internship.
  • Proficiency in Python programming, with a focus on data analysis, modeling, and tool development.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and Python GIS libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Folium) is beneficial.
  • Strong mathematical skills to perform calculations related to hydraulic and hydrologic models, with a willingness to learn new tools and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, both in-person and in writing, are essential for collaborating with team members and presenting technical information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with hydraulics and hydrology modeling tools (e.g., HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS) is preferred, but not required.
  • Registrations are preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Gain exposure to coding and tool development in hydraulics and hydrology, focusing on Python-based solutions for flood hazard and risk management.
  • Work as part of a team to develop, maintain, and test computational tools and models for hydrologic and hydraulic analysis.
  • Perform technical analysis, contribute to tool improvements, and produce project deliverables to support floodplain mapping and risk assessment.
  • Compile data, prepare reports, and perform quality reviews, ensuring that developed tools meet project requirements.
