About The Position

Do you have a strong understanding of water quality and life support systems? Are you passionate about wildlife conservation? The Indianapolis Zoo is searching for a dedicated Water Quality Specialist to support the health and safety of our aquatic collection through precise testing and monitoring of water quality across our aquariums and pools.

As part of the Oceans team, this role plays a key part in advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. Ideal candidates bring strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a Life Science field or equivalent required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of relevant work or volunteer experience.
• Strong knowledge of water quality parameters, filtration systems, life support systems and laboratory testing procedures.
• Highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to make sound assessments in a variety of environments.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders and navigate uneven terrain.
• Indiana Driver's License (or ability to obtain one) and a driving record that is deemed insurable by the Zoo's insurance carrier.
• Ability to work weekends, evenings and overtime as required.
• Willingness to work with potential exposure to chemicals, bloodborne pathogens and zoonotic diseases (training provided).
• Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications (CPR, First Aid, AED and oxygen administration).

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience with water quality testing in a zoo or aquarium setting (paid or internship) strongly preferred.
• SCUBA certification is strongly preferred; must obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Will have direct responsibility and accountability for the performance of water quality testing.
• Perform routine and special-case water quality testing and communicate any concerns to management.
• Monitor and assist in maintaining life support systems, including chlorine and ozone systems and ORP probes.
• Maintain the cleanliness, organization and supply inventory of the laboratory.
• Train staff, volunteers and interns on lab protocols as directed.
• Assist aquarists with daily husbandry tasks including diet preparation, feeding, exhibit cleaning, public chats, SCUBA-assisted maintenance and behavioral enrichment.
• Implement and support fish and invertebrate quarantine procedures
• Follow all Zoo policies, biome protocols and safety guidelines.
• Work in outdoor, indoor and underwater environments in varied weather conditions.
