This program outlines a structured training path for individuals seeking to become Water Operators.The Water Operator Apprentice is an entry-level position that involves training and performing less complex tasks in the field operations and maintenance of the City's water supply and distribution systems under direct supervision. Tasks include excavation, water main work, utility locating, service tickets, meter work, water testing, record keeping, and general labor. This is a part-time position from 7 am to 3:30 pm 5 days a week with the possibility of full time assignment when available based on training and performance measures at the completion of the 6 month program. Essential Job Duties Provide respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers, internal and external customers, community members, and the public at large. Maintain a positive and productive environment, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department and Division. Assist with inspection, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution system. Assist with fixing water mains and service leaks, and other distribution assets. Assist with inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants and valves, including painting fire hydrants, exercising valves, flushing hydrants to remove water main line sediment to assure water quality and fire protection and completing minor repairs as needed. Assist with yard restoration and maintenance, including brush hog easements, yard restorations from excavations, sod installations, vegetation control program, and mowing city water division properties. Assist full water main installation projects. Locates, identifies, and marks city utilities including valves, hydrants, water and sewer mains, manholes and meter structures. Accurately records and updates GPS locations of infrastructure for GIS mapping updates and maintenance programs. Perform daily operations such as processing setter replacements, locates, valve exercising, leak detection investigations, customer concerns, installation, repairs and replacing water meters, meter pits /lids and valve boxes. and complete monthly nonpayment disconnects. Completes meter reading, service tickets, concerns, leak checks, non-consumption meter checks and disconnects for utility billing purposes. Assist with DNR and EPA water testing and reporting functions under licensed operator supervision. Assist with backflow prevention program inspections and waivers. Perform the job safely and in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
