About The Position

Drive and operate heavy and technical equipment in the maintenance, repair and replacement of the District's water distribution system. Perform as a project lead in completing assigned projects; provide occasional on-the-job training. Help ensure work site safety. Responsible to take supervisory call after hours, as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least three years of job-related prior experience preferred.
  • At least 100 hours (supervised) operating heavy equipment. Including backhoe and trackhoe preferred.
  • Must have a proven ability to safely operate heavy equipment including backhoe, trackhoe, loader, and skidsteer required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Commercial Driver's License; Class A with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements minimum.
  • Utah State Drinking Water Operator Certification Grade 4 required.
  • Must have knowledge about how to operate heavy equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, water truck and other heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Must know how to operate large equipment safely and a basic knowledge of how to use hand and power tools.
  • Must have an understanding of safe work practices and knowledge of how to position, locate, and set up warning signs and safety cones on local and state roads.
  • Must be able to make logical decisions using generally recognized skills and techniques.
  • Must be able to operate two-way radios, metal detectors, atmospheric and chlorine tester.
  • Must be able to supervise two or more persons and solve problems safely and effectively.
  • Must have knowledge of the District water transmission and distribution system for proper valve shutdowns for repairs or new pipeline construction.
  • Must perform all job tasks in compliance with GHID safety policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to apply common sense, and conduct analysis as required solving certain problems. Such work may include use of small and large equipment in inspection, maintenance and construction of the water distribution system.
  • Must be able to verbally communicate with Department Staff and on occasion with the public and business vendors.
  • Must be able to communicate using simple hand signals during normal operation of large equipment.
  • Must be able to properly and safely operate tap machines, backhoe, track-hoe, dump truck, compressors, forklift, truck crane, jack hammer, jumping jack, plate compactor, snap cutters, locators, valve machine, cutting torch, sump pumps and various hand and power tools.

  • Utah State Wastewater Collections Certification Grade 4 preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily work of repairing or replacing the District's water distribution system by providing truck and heavy equipment operation during the installation of new water mains, water main repair and service connection leaks. Perform assembly work on water pipelines including valves, joints, hydrants and other appurtenances. Assist in the replacement of sprinklers, sod, cement, and asphalt etc. Provide heavy equipment support including dump truck, backhoe and track-hoe operations. Assist wastewater department in repair of damaged sewer mains and laterals, as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspection on heavy equipment and perform a daily check on fluids, tire pressure, and bleeding of all air tanks in conformance with applicable state and federal regulations and District policy. Responsible for visual inspections and to complete all repair orders and follow ups to ensure safe operation of equipment.
  • Provide assistance in the traffic control set-up, and ensuring of a safe worksite on all construction projects. Assist with the training of employees in procedures and proper and safe use of equipment, and traffic control setup.
  • Supervise work crew in the maintenance and repair of the District's water distribution system, in the absence of the Construction Foreman and on-call as needed.
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and completion of work projects.
  • Assist with after-hours emergency response and provide supervision for staff who respond to after-hours emergency response calls.
