About The Position

The Water Infrastructure Utility Locator position at the City of Tucson is responsible for locating and marking underground water and reclaim piping to prevent accidental damage during construction activities. This role requires independent judgment and initiative to interpret equipment readings and accurately identify system locations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.
• Four years of directly related experience in utility locating.

Nice To Haves

• Direct experience with locating pipelines (Water, Sewer, Gas), including non-conductive pipelines.
• Experience operating Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) units.

Responsibilities

• Locate and mark the City's underground water and reclaim piping using various maps and electronic locating devices.
• Respond to AZ811 ticket requests for utility location services and interpret documentation to determine utility locations in the field.
• Provide physical indications of utility locations using marking methods such as paint and flags.
• Assist contractors, customers, and Tucson Water staff with utility location requests for design, investigation, and inspection.
• Operate a motor vehicle and Ground Penetrating Radar equipment to locate difficult utility locations.
• Respond to reports of contractor damaged water lines and participate in investigations to determine fault.
• Create and submit afterhours tickets for emergency repairs by utility maintenance crews.
