About The Position

The Water Field Technician I position at Craven County Government involves performing unskilled to semi-skilled work for the County Water Department, focusing on the installation, maintenance, and repair of water infrastructure. The role requires responding to locate requests, completing work orders, and maintaining hydrants, while also participating in a meter changeout program. The technician will be on emergency call rotation and must be prepared to work in various weather conditions.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance field; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Working knowledge of standard methods and materials in water system construction and maintenance.
• Working knowledge of OSHA safety guidelines for water system construction and maintenance.
• Working knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools.
• Ability to accurately read water meters and transcribe readings to work orders and re-read sheets.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work orders and locate tickets.

Responsibilities

• Responds to NC811 locate requests by locating water lines, valves, hydrants, and services to prevent damage.
• Completes work orders for activation/termination of service and investigates leaks and reading errors.
• Repairs hydrants as needed and maintains clear visibility around hydrants for fire departments and mowers.
• Actively participates in the meter changeout program.
• May be required to serve during times of disaster and assist Meter Readers or Water Plant Operators.
• Performs other related work as required.
