The City of Idaho Falls is now accepting applications for the position of Water Distribution Operator. This position performs working level skilled plumbing and pipe fitting duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of City Water Distribution Systems. Responsibilities include installing, renewing, or repairing water service lines; clamping leaks on existing service lines; installing copper tubing, curb and corporation stops, and fittings for renewed or new service lines; and restoring property damaged as a result of construction. The operator will also install, renew, or repair water mains and services; tap mains to make water service and main line connections; install, read, and repair water meters and meter pits; repair leaks in the water system; raise or lower valve boxes, curb boxes, manholes, or fire hydrants when necessary for changes of grade on streets, sidewalks, etc.; and replace or repair non-functioning water meters, fire hydrants, fittings, and broken pipe sections. Additionally, the operator inspects water system construction within City right-of-way to verify compliance with City standards and requirements, conducts fire flow testing for fire hydrants using specialized flow and pressure testing equipment, exercises water valves and fire hydrants manually and with valve exercising trailer, performs system flushing for water quality control, locates water mains and service lines, and performs leak detection. The role requires the use of hand shovels and picks to complete fine grading or bedding of pipe, thawing machines to free frozen pipes and restore water service, and operating service trucks, dump trucks, hydro-excavation trucks, and light and heavy equipment to accomplish required tasks. The operator will also respond to after-hour emergency and customer service calls while serving on a 24-hour standby shift, including weekends and holidays, and assist in the plowing and removal of snow from public rights-of-way as may be required.
