About The Position

The position involves maintaining a structurally sound water distribution system by performing repairs of all leaks, identifying areas in need of corrective action, and monitoring/documenting locations of substandard water mains, fire hydrants, valves, service laterals, and meters. The role requires performing residential and commercial water taps using various methods and equipment, troubleshooting water meter problems, and ensuring proper functioning of hydrants and valves. Additionally, the position includes analyzing system problems, utilizing computer programs in the field, and safely performing excavation procedures. The employee will also be responsible for responding to customer complaints, locating valves and leaks, and maintaining tools and equipment in optimal condition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by vocational/technical training in the operation/maintenance of distribution systems.
  • 1-2 years of previous experience and/or training involving water systems.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within one year of hire date.
  • Must pass the Level D Water Distribution exam within one year of hire date.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Maximo, payroll software, and GIS mapping.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a structurally sound water distribution system by performing repairs of all leaks.
  • Identifies areas in need of corrective action, monitoring/documenting locations of substandard water mains, fire hydrants, valves, service laterals, and meters.
  • Performs residential and commercial water taps using various methods and equipment such as hydraulic and mechanical tools.
  • Troubleshoots residential and commercial water meter problems; replaces parts or performs full meter change-outs.
  • Performs testing of radio read meters after installation.
  • Performs repairs of hydrants and valves; ensures they are accessible and in proper working order.
  • Performs repairs on system main lines of all types: PVC, Ductile Iron, Cast Iron, Galvanized, and Asbestos Cement.
  • Analyzes system problems derived from materials extracted in the field during and after repairs.
  • Efficiently utilizes computer programs in the field such as GIS, ARCView, and MAXIMO/Syclo.
  • Safely performs proper excavation procedures using excavators and shoring materials.
  • Performs installation of new water mains and services and replaces old lines/services as needed.
  • Responds to customer complaints related to the water distribution system.
  • Locates valves, mains, services, and leaks in the field using electronic and mechanical detection equipment.
  • Receives, prepares or completes various forms, reports, and correspondence.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, departments, customers, engineers, inspectors, contractors, and other individuals as needed.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles in optimal condition.
  • Provides proper traffic control when work is being performed within affected distance of routine traffic and right-of-way.
