Our client is seeking a Water Department Supervisor to oversee the daily operations, maintenance, and performance of a municipal water and wastewater utility system. This is a working leadership role responsible for supervising department staff while ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and service reliability. This position plays a critical role in maintaining water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater infrastructure systems in compliance with federal and environmental standards. The Water Department Supervisor is accountable for the overall performance and functionality of water and sewer operations. This leader will plan, organize, and supervise maintenance activities, ensure compliance with environmental regulations, manage departmental staff, and drive operational improvements. This role requires hands-on leadership, strong technical knowledge of water and wastewater systems, and the ability to operate in a 24-hour on-call environment.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in water and wastewater system operations
  • Strong knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection infrastructure
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements related to public utilities
  • Ability to prepare technical and operational reports
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Compliance with Drug-Free Workplace policies
  • Availability for occasional travel as required
  • Ability to attend scheduled council or administrative meetings

Responsibilities

  • Oversee preventive maintenance and daily operations of water and wastewater systems
  • Supervise and support all department personnel, including scheduling and performance management
  • Plan and manage maintenance and repair of: Water mains and distribution lines Water valves, fire hydrants, and meter valves Wastewater collection pipelines and sewer lines Lift stations and reclaimed water systems Odor and corrosion control systems
  • Monitor system performance to ensure compliance with USEPA Safe Drinking Water Act standards and applicable regulatory guidelines
  • Create and manage work schedules and assignments based on operational needs
  • Develop performance expectations and conduct evaluations with department staff
  • Review operational goals and recommend improvements for efficiency and service quality
  • Prepare, review, and distribute operational reports (monthly, quarterly, annual)
  • Support data collection and documentation processes
  • Maintain adequate inventory and supplies for uninterrupted system operations
  • Recommend departmental budget needs and operational improvements
  • Attend required meetings, including occasional evening or weekend sessions
  • Participate in a rotating 24-hour standby schedule
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership
