About The Position

Assists with the daily operations of the Water and Wastewater Construction departments, including manholes, fire hydrants, and related infrastructure. The Assistant Superintendent supervises employees, schedules, and ensures safety policies and procedures are followed. Assists with the planning of water and wastewater construction and maintenance projects; assists with preparing annual department budget; and may perform various water and wastewater maintenance and construction work. May serve as Water and Wastewater Systems Superintendent during their absence. Residency Requirement : Employees who are likely to be called to work in cases of emergency may be required to reside within reasonable response commuting ranges of their places of work. A reasonable response time to an emergency is thirty (30) minutes. Residency which allows response time to a City emergency of thirty (30) minutes MUST be established with 90 days of hire.

Requirements

High school graduation or its equivalent plus 5 years of experience, at least 2 of which involved supervision; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
General management principles; water and sewer system management principles, practices, procedures, and safety codes; budgeting principles and procedures; computers; and standard office practices and procedures
Operate computers; build, maintain, and repair water and sewer systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; develop, organize, motivate, and effectively utilize staff; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and read and interpret manuals, ArcGIS mapping, policies, and other documents
Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker endorsement
Class C Water Distribution License
Type II Wastewater Collection License

Responsibilities

Assists with the daily operations of the water and wastewater construction department, including monitoring the overall construction, maintenance, and repair of the city's water and wastewater system to include the wastewater lift stations and ensuring that all safety standards are met
Supervises construction crews, including assigning and reviewing work, conducting performance reviews, training employees, and making recommendations regarding hiring, promoting, disciplining, and/or dismissing employees
Schedules and supervises the planning of water and wastewater construction and maintenance projects, including designing construction of new lines, and routes
Works closely with Water and Wastewater Systems Superintendent for crew assignments to complete crossing training of staff doing construction work, service work;.
Work as a team member promoting good morale of staff and with all City of Brenham customers and employees
Coordinates crews during system emergencies such as water leaks, sewer overflows and lift station events
Has knowledge of TCEQ rules and regulations regarding water distribution and wastewater collection
Assist in annual department budget
Monitors SCADA and responds to alarms or alerts
Assist Crew Leaders, Operators, and maintenance workers as needed including operating heavy equipment and driving commercial vehicle during emergencies
Orders supplies, tools, and materials
Prepares required city, state, and federal reports
Attend various re-occurring training courses as needed
Receives and responds to citizen complaints
