WSP is currently initiating a search for a Water & Wastewater Engineer (Entry Level / P2) for our Baltimore, MD office. The ideal candidate will support the assessment, design, and plan production of municipal water and wastewater projects and/or other water resources related project, including water/wastewater infrastructure design/assessment/rehabilitation, including conveyance, treatment, and facility design; may also support with drainage design of open and closed systems and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis. The position will support projects through planning, design, and construction phases under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, with a focus in Water Resources or closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in environmental engineering, or water resources engineering, supporting water, wastewater, or civil infrastructure projects.
  • Foundational knowledge of water and wastewater engineering principles, including conveyance systems and municipal infrastructure design.
  • Familiarity with public sector or utility based project work, including preparation of drawings, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and engineering practices related to water and wastewater systems.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, spreadsheets, and engineering design tools (e.g., AutoCAD/Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior design experience.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro, MicroStation, OpenRoad, PCSWMM, InfoWorks ICM)
  • Exposure to municipal utility clients.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from surveys, record drawings, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical reports, and field investigations to support water and wastewater infrastructure design and rehabilitation projects, and/or water resources projects.
  • Assist with preparation of engineering calculations, drawings, quantities, and technical documentation for water and sewer conveyance systems, or drainage systems including pipelines, appurtenances, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform basic professional engineering tasks related to water distribution and wastewater collection systems, or drainage systems including preliminary hydraulic calculations, evaluation of system constraints, and support of constructability considerations.
  • Support sewer and water main rehabilitation projects by assisting with review of condition assessment data (e.g., inspection reports), development of preliminary rehabilitation concepts, and documentation under the direction of senior staff.
  • Assist with verifying site conditions and constraints, including utility conflicts, access limitations, and right-of-way considerations.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, design documentation, and report sections summarizing analyses, findings, and conclusions using standard electronic tools and project templates.
  • Support project managers and technical leads with design submittals (30%, 65%, 90%), comment tracking, and responses to agency review comments.
  • Assist with construction phase support activities, including review of RFIs and submittals under supervision and participation in field visits as needed.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field work permitting.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
