About The Position

Reporting to Engineering and Maintenance Supervisor, the Watch Engineer Operates and maintains a low-pressure boiler plant, chiller plant, air handlers and all associated equipment.  Monitor computer readings and make required adjustments to maintain desired climate in all areas

Requirements

  • 2nd Class Fireman's License required. Must have 5 years experience.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment, BMS systems, Schneider and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, visitors and volunteers; deal with challenging people and/or stressful scenarios.
  • Must be physically able to meet all job requirements; ie: standing for long period, climbing ladders and ability to lift and install equipment as needed.
  • Valid US Driver's license and/or DOT card
  • Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped spaces, during inclement weather year-round
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed

Responsibilities

  • Start-up, operate and/or shut down the Chilled Water, Hot Water, and Steam Plants.  Monitor and operate boilers, feed pumps, chilled and hydronic pumps, fans, air compressors and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Understand, monitor, and adjust the building maintenance systems (BMS) to maintain the desired climates through various areas of the Museum.
  • Record temperatures, humidity, fuel consumption at various sites.   Maintain boiler room log.  Read and record utility (gas, water, electric and oil) meters.
  • Rebuild Plant pumps and other equipment as necessary for scheduled maintenance.  Clean, repair or replace parts as necessary.  As required, use machine/hand tools for repairs, replace or apply insulation; remove and replace motors, replace or install piping. Assist with other trades such as Plumbing, Mechanical, and Controls.
  • Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance program as directed.  Work from charts, specifications, manuals, written and verbal instruction. Use such tools and equipment such as staging, ladders, lifts, drill press, hand power tools, gauges, and computers.
  • Respond to all emergencies:  fire alarms, floods, leaks, temperature and humidity alarms, etc. Assist with controlling emergency situations.  Email and communicate as required.
  • Respond to various calls from the Command Center – doors, elevators, climate issues, etc.
  • Report all problems, deficiencies and shutdowns to the Engineering and Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Assist with various duties on all shifts as necessary. This includes but should not be limited to the following: replace lamps in fixtures; retrieve equipment for special events (extension cords, lighting, etc.). Respond to Plumbing, Electrical and Safety problems. Respond to calls from SMFA at Tufts and the MFA Parking Garage as required.
  • Maintain necessary records. Move materials as necessary in performance of duties. Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions to Supervisor. Maintain both East and West plants, Watch Office and equipment in clean, safe and orderly condition. Follow established MFA rules and regulations and maintain quality standards. Attend all required safety training sessions.
