About The Position

Performs intermediate technical work overseeing the daily operations of H2GO's existing Grade 3 .65 MGD extended aeration wastewater treatment plant. This position is designated as essential during emergency or disaster situations. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Water Resources Manager.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain biological wastewater treatment certifications.
  • Knowledge of NC State laws regulating water purification, wastewater treatment, and the standard procedures necessary to meet operating permits.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of equipment instruments and control devices used in wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of the standard tests and equipment used in required laboratory analysis of water wastewater.
  • Working knowledge of the use of computers. Experience using Excel, Windows, and Outlook.
  • Ability to collect operational data.
  • Ability to operate a manual or a computerized plant; ability to solve routine technical or operational problems.
  • Ability to perform and conduct standard laboratory tests.
  • Ability to understand and interpret detailed procedural oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to accurately prepare detailed records and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors; interpersonal skills are a must
  • Ability to work safely individually.
  • Ability to take On-Call shifts when needed and be available for emergency operations.
  • Operating experience with water and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Graduation from high school is supplemented by chemistry, biology or mechanical maintenance course work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess or can obtain and maintain Biological Wastewater 2 Certification within 18 months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s license.
  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing, standing, walking and reaching; work has standard vision requirements; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Work requires the ability to maintain a high level of cognitive function and concentration to perform detailed analysis and execute critical thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the wastewater treatment plant; observe, troubleshoot, and control the biological process, maintain, and ensure operation of pumps, motors, mixers, and related equipment. Make the necessary adjustment at the direction of the plant’s ORC.
  • Collect samples and perform standard analyses and tests; keep precise daily, monthly, and annual records and interpret results to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and all operating permits.
  • Troubleshoot and perform standard repairs and maintenance of plant equipment; may assist with more difficult or complex equipment repair or replacement.
  • Read various charts, graphs, gauges, computer screens and meters; compute from readings and record volumes pumped and treated; monitor tank levels.
  • Receive and unload chemical deliveries to the plant; ensure proper storage; fill, clean and replace tanks of chemicals and other tanks.
  • Employ a working knowledge of treatment chemicals and their best practices and safe handling procedures and protocols, consistent with SDS.
  • Maintain facilities, perform custodial care of buildings and grounds including but not limited to sweeping and mopping floors, dusting, cleaning restrooms and windows.
  • This position is responsible for creating a culture of belonging and inclusion.
