About The Position

The Treatment Plant Operator A/Mechanic - Wastewater position involves performing experienced crafts and trades work in the daily operation, maintenance, and housekeeping typical of a wastewater treatment facility. The role includes operating process pumps, motors, blowers, and other wastewater treatment plant equipment; taking samples of sewage, effluents, and sludge; performing simple, routine laboratory tests; cleaning treatment plant structures and equipment; and performing mechanical repairs on various equipment used in booster plants and utility lift stations. The positions are available in the North, Central, and South areas of the County, and the work schedule involves shift work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • For TPO CLASS A: Five years of documented hands-on experience in a wastewater treatment facility and two years of mechanical repair experience.
  • For TPO CLASS B: Three years of documented hands-on experience in a wastewater treatment facility and two years of mechanical repair experience.
  • For TPO CLASS C: One year of documented hands-on experience in a wastewater treatment facility and two years of mechanical repair experience.
  • Valid Florida driver's license.
  • Valid active Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Class A, B, or C Wastewater Operator's license.
  • Ability to pass OSHA-compliant forklift operator training.
  • Physical capability to wear and utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nice To Haves

  • Additional college or technical coursework in subjects related to science or treatment plant operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate process pumps, motors, blowers, and other wastewater treatment plant equipment.
  • Take samples of sewage, effluents, and sludge.
  • Perform simple, routine laboratory tests, including sludge settling, centrifuge, and chlorine residual tests.
  • Clean treatment plant structures and equipment.
  • Perform mechanical repairs on tanks, pumps, plant generators, mixers, aerators, and other equipment.
