About The Position

The Wastewater Treatment Operator I, II, III position is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant in Spearfish, SD. Requirements

  • Knowledge of physical, biological, and chemical wastewater treatment processes.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engines, pumps, blowers, valves, centrifuges, rolling equipment, chemical feed equipment, and other plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and permit requirements.
  • Knowledge of plant reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of SCADA system operation principles.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, equipment, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of plant and related equipment.
  • Skill in gathering data and preparing reports.
  • Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment and of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B commercial driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota.
  • Operator I - Possession or ability to obtain South Dakota Class I Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
  • Operator II - Possession of South Dakota Class II Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification.
  • Operator III - Possession of South Dakota Class III Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a physical presence and reliable attendance with the ability to respond at all hours when necessary.
  • Performs process control testing to monitor and adjust biological treatment processes.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on all plant equipment, buildings, and grounds.
  • Operates and maintains mixed media filters and related equipment.
  • Operates and maintains dewatering centrifuge and related equipment.
  • Operates and maintains raw sewage lift station including rebuilding and refurbishing pumps and related equipment.
  • Performs compliance laboratory testing.
  • Documents all records and data for city staff and federal compliance for the surface water discharge permit.
  • Participates in plant safety programs including confined space training.
  • Operates assigned heavy equipment.
  • Maintains plant grounds.
  • Cleans building and work areas to maintain a safe and tidy environment.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly wage between $21.33 and $24.13, with a range of $18.95 - $26.50 per hour based on experience and certification.
