Job Description SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s wastewater plant equipment. Work responsibilities extend to providing work direction and training to plant mechanics and performing various daily administrative duties. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Provides work direction and training to plant operators; provides instructions to mechanics; monitors the work of mechanics. Provides suggestions to the Water/Wastewater Plant Maintenance Superintendent regarding daily operations; and acts in the place of the Superintendent when requested by the Superintendent. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on plant equipment and lift stations. Repairs and adjusts equipment to meet specifications and technical codes. Maintains lift station pumps, controls, panels, floats, transducers and valves. Maintains bar screens, clarifier drives, gear boxes, blowers, hoisting devices, and the degritter. Maintains daily work logs of activities. Drives and operates a crane truck. Cleans trucks and the maintenance shops. Follows all safety rules and regulations utilizes proper safety precautions. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • two years’ experience in wastewater plant maintenance operations including one year of supervisory or lead work experience
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a Class D Wastewater Operator License.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Wastewater treatment principles, methods and practices.
  • Maintenance scheduling techniques and predictive maintenance procedures.
  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in the repair and adjustment of wastewater plant equipment.
  • Methods, techniques and equipment used in wastewater treatment.
  • Recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
  • TCEQ.
  • Safety rules and regulations.
  • Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment.
  • Providing efficient customer service.
  • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Operating a crane truck.
  • Performing mechanical repair, maintenance and modification of treatment plant equipment.
  • Reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices reflecting plant operations.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
