About The Position

Provides oversight of non-destructive assay (NDA) activities associated with transuranic (TRU) waste and low-level / mixed low-level waste (LLW/MLLW) at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC) as a Non-Destructive Assay Expert Technical Reviewer (ETR) within the Waste Management TRU Program Organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related physical science or engineering with 4 years relevant NDA experience and 2 years nuclear experience.
  • Ability to qualify as an NDA Independent Technical Reviewer and NDA Expert Technical Reviewer.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in physical science or engineering.
  • Experience using Gamma Spectroscopy software, such as Canberra/Miron Technologies NDA 2000/Genie 2000, Ortec Maestro/GammaVision, MGA or FRAM.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and expert technical reviews of NDA systems, procedures, and data analysis to ensure compliance with established protocols, standards (e.g., ANSI/ISO), and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide recommendations for improving NDA techniques, processes, and system reliability.
  • Review, revise, and approve technical procedures including operating procedures, calibration procedures, validation procedures, and quality assurance documents to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review Real-Time Radiography (RTR) recordings to identify items requiring detailed modeling, including those needing density and matrix corrections.
  • Independently perform ISOCS modeling for specific waste configurations to optimize measurement efficiency and accuracy.
  • Oversee calibration, certification, operation, and assist in troubleshooting of NDA instruments, including RBAS (Retrieval Box Assay System), ISOCS (In Situ Object Counting Systems), SGRS (SWEPP Gamma-Ray Spectrometer), WAGS (Waste Assay Gamma-Ray Spectrometer), and DAS (Drum Assay Systems).
  • Support instrument operations to ensure accurate and reliable performance across all NDA systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations organizations to diagnose and resolve instrument or performance issues.
  • Support software validation and testing in support of the NDA systems.
  • Calculate measurement control data and review and approve control charts to detect trends or anomalies impacting measurement quality.
  • Validate NDA measurement data and batch data reports in the Waste Tracking System (WTS) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Perform validation of data generated by NDA systems to ensure measurement quality and compliance.
  • Review NDA activities for adherence to DOE, EPA, and WIPP Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
  • Support audits by DOE, EPA, and other regulatory bodies, including preparation and on-site participation.
  • Support implementation of criticality safety controls and criticality working requirements related to NDA and waste characterization activities.
  • Mentor and train junior personnel and independent technical reviewers in NDA operations, data analysis, and procedural compliance.
  • Performs validation activities for NDA measurements associated with WIPP and LLW/MLLW waste disposition and disposal.
  • Performs oversight of non-destructive assay operations, including instrument troubleshooting, repair, certification, calibration and confirmation activities.
  • Interfaces with operations and waste management programs personnel for technical and operational support.
  • Supports internal and external audit and surveillance activities, for WIPP, DOE and EPA audits.
  • Conducts training and mentoring to ISOCS Technicians and Independent Technical Reviewers.
  • Provides support for procedure revisions and periodic review for WIPP related documents and operating procedures.
  • Maintains required reading, training, etc.
