About The Position

ShipMonk is looking for a Warehouse Automation Systems Engineer to bridge the gap between our physical sorting infrastructure and our digital software ecosystem. We are moving beyond traditional "maintenance" and toward a software-driven approach to warehouse efficiency. You are the ideal candidate if you are a Medior Software Developer who feels restricted by just sitting behind a desk. You have a "hacker" mindset—you want to know how the scanner talks to the database, why the PLC logic is delaying a diverter, and how a Python script can optimize the entire flow. You won't just be fixing hardware; you will be owning the intelligence behind our automated sorting systems.

Requirements

  • The Hybrid Profile: You have a software-first mindset (Medior level) but are "hardware-capable." You enjoy the physical manifestation of your code.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong experience with Python or similar languages for automation and system-level scripting.
  • Hardware Literacy: Familiarity with PLCs, industrial scanners (Keyence, Cognex, etc.), and conveyor systems.
  • Networking Knowledge: Solid understanding of TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, and troubleshooting localized network issues.
  • Problem-Solving DNA: You don't just fix symptoms; you find root causes in complex, multi-layered systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SQL or NoSQL databases.
  • Background in Robotics or Mechatronics.
  • Previous experience in a high-volume fulfillment or logistics environment.

Responsibilities

  • Sorter Systems & HW Orchestration
  • Identify & Debug: Act as the primary technical owner for warehouse sorters, scanning tunnels, and automated conveyors.
  • HW Maintenance: Perform high-level maintenance and troubleshooting on industrial hardware (scanners, dimensioners, sensors).
  • PLC Integration: Navigate and debug PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) environments to ensure physical movements align with system instructions.
  • Automation & Software Development
  • Sorting Logic: Write and maintain scripts (primarily in Python) to improve sorting efficiency, error handling, and data throughput.
  • System Integration: Ensure seamless communication between the hardware layer and our Warehouse Management System (WMS).
  • Data Visualization: Develop tools or dashboards to monitor sorter health and performance metrics in real-time.
  • Network & Infrastructure Resilience
  • Industrial Networking: Solve complex network challenges specific to the warehouse floor (latency, wireless interference, IP management for IoT devices).
  • Connectivity: Ensure that every scanner and controller has 100% uptime and robust failover protocols.
  • Process Optimization
  • Systems Thinking: Look at the "big picture" to identify bottlenecks. Is a delay caused by a mechanical limit, a network lag, or a software bug?
  • Innovation: Research and propose new hardware or software automation tools to keep ShipMonk at the forefront of logistics technology.
