We have a job opening for a full-time 2nd Shift Operations Supervisor in our Kalamazoo, MI distribution center. The primary role of the Shipping Supervisor is providing leadership and direction for the Shipping department in this location; overseeing handling of merchandise for shipment and departmental staff as efficiently, safely and productively as possible, to ensure that customer expectations are exceeded.

  • Responsible for overall management of the Shipping Department in the Kalamazoo location.
  • Organizing the daily workload of department and directs employees accordingly.
  • Works to ensure freight and packages are being moved to destinations on time.
  • Play a key role in interviewing and hiring quality staff members; overseeing a strong training regimen for new staff; continuously developing new and experienced workers; managing staff; and completing performance management reviews on assigned employees twice a year.
  • Oversees and is directly involved (hands on) in the following Shipping operations: productivity, quality, freight handling, including, but not limited to, customer service, and safety.
  • Responsible for ensuring prompt, efficient and accurate handling of merchandise as well as developing and implementing team goals.
  • Providing leadership by example while assisting with daily shipping functions. This includes performing duties, such as building and consolidating pallets of customer shipment; organization and staging of the department; preparing orders for shipment with external carriers, such as UPS and FedEx and other various duties.
  • Ensures that departments keep a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Assigns general custodial tasks and establishes cleaning schedule for areas.
  • Supports a healthy and safe work environment by communicating unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintains warehouse equipment to ensure safety of employees; addresses any mechanical issues that are reported.
  • Works proactively to foster and maintain a positive team-oriented atmosphere at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of related experience required and one year in warehouse operations or distribution is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift/pull/carry at least 70 pounds; must be willing/able to stand and walk for entire shift, often over 8 hours. With or without accommodation.
  • Strong customer service, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to effectively build relationships are essential.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check and drug screening.
  • Previous experience supervising, training, developing and providing direction to staff a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of Voice Pick and VAI systems (or similar warehouse management or operating system) is preferred.
