About The Position

James Madison University (JMU), a publicly funded university located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, is seeking Wage (part-time) Landscape Workers. This is a year-round, weekday position with a day shift schedule. It offers an opportunity to gain Landscape-specific certifications, such as the Pesticide Registered Technician license, build landscaping skills, and train on various landscaping equipment. Requirements

  • Possess working knowledge of general landscape maintenance.
  • Be able to use manual and power tools.
  • Be able to operate motor vehicles, tractors, trucks, and various types of landscape equipment such as mowers, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, chainsaws, and edgers.
  • Be able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Be able to lift heavy objects up to 100 pounds with or without an accommodation.
  • Be able to do physically demanding work for extended periods of time.
  • For some positions, be at least 19 years old and have possessed a valid driver’s license for at least a total of 24 months at the time of hire.

  • Knowledge of plants, shrubs, and flowers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general landscape maintenance including weed-eating, mowing, raking, weeding, sodding, trimming, edging, mulching, leaf disposal, irrigating, pruning, grading, snow and ice removal, and spraying.
  • Plant and maintain flowers, trees, and shrubs (for some positions).
  • Perform trash cleanup and litter removal.
  • Maintain parking lots and roads by patching potholes.
  • Assist in the preparation of university areas for special events.
  • Operate utility vehicles (may be required).
