About The Position

As a Underwriting Manager, Sr. you'll be responsible for the oversight and development of underwriters and underwriting managers for the lending channel. You'll drive departmental productivity, efficiency and customer service across multiple underwriting teams. You'll will also be a major contributor to process improvement, expense management and loan quality. You'll be a working manager with in-depth knowledge of loan processes, understanding the complexity of various types of mortgage documents and investor requirements. You'll be expected to understand the Bank's policies and procedures, and adhere to all laws, rules, regulatory and compliance regulations. Direct management of Underwriters, Underwriting Managers and Scenario Desk team. Act as a credit SME for conventional, government and non-agency loans; review and decision complex loan scenarios escalated by Underwriters, QC Partner, clients, sales and Operations Account Representative (OAR) management. Perform ongoing creation and implementation of process improvements to improve service levels and reduce costs per loan while maintaining loan quality. Ensure team makes sound decisions on exceptions, escalations, and all underwriting and component reviews within the loan review process. Work with the product team in the implementation of the new products/processes for the Underwriting Department. Promote the AmeriHome culture of customer service, quality, and creativity. Regular reporting and presentation of relevant performance metrics in Monthly Business Reviews. Participate in strategic initiative planning and execution; implement tactics to meet divisional goals. Work with AmeriHome Risk Management to ensure alignment between teams, as well as maintaining Quality Control results at or below acceptable levels. Work with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac risk managers/exception team to submit Single Loan Exceptions and Single Loan Variances. Collaborate and calibrate with other underwriting channels for consistent underwriting approach and resource management. Lead and develop a team: responsible for hiring, goal setting, coaching, performance management, training and development.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of related experience in Residential Mortgage Loan Underwriting or similar field.
  • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of residential mortgage industry in Correspondent or Retail Lending, including sales, operations, capital markets and/or other residential mortgage products and services.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, industry standards and practices.
  • Advanced In-depth knowledge of mortgage loan products, lending principles and regulatory compliance.
  • Extensive understanding of mortgage lending principles and underwriting guidelines, including FHA, VA, and conventional loans, loan processing and automated underwriting systems.
  • Working knowledge of mortgage lending principles and underwriting guidelines including self-employed borrowers, partnership, corporation tax return analysis, Appraisal Reviews, condo project reviews, Trust, Leasehold and Power of Attorney documentation.
  • Advanced experience in understanding and knowledge of technology that supports mortgage banking, Encompass (LOS) and core systems and MS Office products.
  • Advanced speaking and writing communication skills.
  • DE or SAR certifications required.
