About The Position

The VP, Netflix Scripted Series drives the creative direction and execution of our series development slate across original and existing IP-derived content. This role is both creative and operational, requiring someone who can champion strong ideas with a clear vision, manage a fast-moving slate, and partner cross-functionally to bring content from concept to greenlight. The VP will maintain an active series development slate, featuring a number of new projects a year, aligning with the Shondaland VP Physical Production on projecting budgets and viability of projects as development unfolds. Across all of this, the VP will act as a bridge, communicating NFLX and showrunner needs to Shondaland, and providing ideas on how to solve problems creatively in a positive, outcome-oriented manner.

Requirements

High awareness of and appreciation for the Shondaland brand and mission.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, and persuasion skills.
Strong acumen in pitching a complete vision for a project in early stages.
Keen ability to stay calm during high pressure decisions and to pivot strategy when needed.
A track record of creative and constructive problem solving at all levels of project development.
Strong awareness of and relationships with television showrunners and writers.
Extensive relationships with talent reps and extensive network of creative resources.
Strong competence with tech/software, specifically key pitch building software.
Experience working in television drama and comedy desired.
Experience managing and mentoring support staff.
Experience acting as “point” on multiple creative projects concurrently.
Previous work at Director level or above.

Responsibilities

Development Pipeline: Continually sell, drive forward and own multiple new projects from early development into early seasons, ensuring there is a constant refreshing of the pipeline.
IP and Talent Scouting: Find material worth adapting - specifically for exciting, high-level writers new to Shondaland. Continually and inclusively research, read, meet, and build relationships with sought after and targeted writers and directors, being mindful of both staffing and development opportunities.
Project Pitches: Prepare pitches for CCO and EPs, as well as for internal Shondaland teams and external partners.
Gap Analysis & Forecasting: Identify what’s missing from the current lineup and “take big swings” with pitches to generate brand expansion and further curate the company’s development slate. Anticipate what audiences will want next. Knows how to set trends, not chase them.
Showrunner Strategy: Strategize on best pairings in terms of creators, additional showrunners, and both Prototype and Producing Directors.
In Development: For projects in active development and specific current shows in production, approve final Producer master notes on all creative steps (pitch docs, story areas, outlines, drafts, pilot cuts) for presentation.
In Production: Lead on set as needed, on an on-call basis. Escalate any issues to CCO and EPs. Weigh in on casting of both series regulars and recurring guests.
In Post-Production: For designated projects in active development and in production, approve and finalize all Producer master notes.
Current Series: Ensure continued quality of assigned current series. Oversee staffing of writers’ rooms and oversee director booking. Close deals and manage budget.
Internal Management: Provide support and growth opportunities for junior members of the team and Administrative Assistant.
Team Synergy: Remain holistically mindful of the full scale and synergy of Shondaland, and make connections and recommendations interdepartmentally.
