The Vice President- Risk Management is responsible for creating comprehensive risk and insurance management policies and the framework to identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks for the MSG family of companies, including MSG Sports Corp and Sphere Entertainment Co. The VP conducts evaluations, development, implementation, and administration of all Casualty, Property, Environmental, Construction, Production, and Executive & Special Risk Liability insurance programs. The VP is also responsible for the establishment and management of the companies’ Captive Insurance companies, Securing Surety capacity, as well as Merger/Acquisition/Divestiture Due Diligence and the integration or run-off of the insurance policies, supporting the companies and their respective business units and subsidiaries, as well as the 501-C3 organizations (e.g., Garden of Dreams Foundation). The VP manages the Risk Management department to achieve the optimal balance between risk, cost, statutory, and contractual requirements.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in Risk Management, including Insurance program oversight, and claims management, with expertise in Construction, Production, and International insurance concepts and team management.
  • Strong ability to articulate as well as present complex insurance and risk management issues in a concise manner.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills. Strong financial acumen, including understanding actuarial analysis, accruals impact on budgets, and cost-of-risk optimization strategies.
  • Prior experience in managing others effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to the team in the design and placement of comprehensive coverage across Casualty, Property, Executive & Specialty lines, including League and Players coverages, tailored to each company’s risk appetite and objectives. Oversee negotiations to secure optimal coverage and pricing aligned with fiscal budget guidance while delivering comprehensive protection and strategic risk solutions for each company.
  • Direct the integration of advanced data analytics and actuarial to inform program design, monitor performance, and identify emerging trends.
  • Collaborate with actuarial consultants to review and interpret independent actuarial analyses that determine accrual levels impacting Finance’s budgets and our long-term risk financing strategies. Ensure insights from actuarial reports and data analytics are integrated into the budget forecasts and objectives.
  • Lead the insurance Due Diligence reviews for Mergers, Acquisitions, Divestitures, and growth opportunities, providing budget guidance and policy procurement, as warranted.
  • Manage the identification and engagement of surety carriers with capacity to meet complex bonding requirements. Negotiate competitive terms and premiums and oversee administration in collaboration with Legal and Finance to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.”
  • Partner with Environmental Health & Safety to advance loss-reduction initiatives by providing strategic resources, including Safety Committee leadership, actionable data analytics, automated audit tools, and access to specialized risk engineering expertise. Drive collaboration to embed a culture of safety and operational excellence across all companies and operations.
  • Continuously assess and optimize strategic brokerage and carrier relationships to strengthen market positioning and enhance program competitiveness. Lead RFP processes in partnership with Procurement to evaluate performance against service standards, ensuring accountability and value delivery. Foster innovation and flexibility in broker and carrier engagement to address the organization’s evolving business needs and support long-term growth.
  • Develop and implement training programs focused on employee injury prevention, workplace safety protocols, and incident reporting requirements. Partner with People Practices, Internal Communications, and Safety teams to deliver engaging content that promotes compliance, reduces injury frequency, and fosters a proactive safety culture across the organization.
  • Oversee the administration, financial management, regulatory compliance, and insurance placements for MSGE’s Captive Reinsurance Company and Sphere’s Captive Insurance Company. Support MSGE’s Board of Directors and collaborate with the external Captive Manager to ensure governance standards, optimize captive structures for cost efficiency and risk transfer, and maintain alignment with enterprise risk and financial objectives.
  • Partner with Sphere’s Creative, Content Production, and Legal teams to identify global risks, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations. Procure specialized insurance solutions to support Ventures, including DICE, Foreign Workers’ Compensation, Local Liability, Inland Marine, Travel Accident, Cast, and Aviation Liability, ensuring compliance and operational continuity.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments in collaboration with Venue Operations, Engineering, and Safety teams to address evolving exposures. Provide actionable insights and guidance to senior management to inform strategic decisions and safeguard organizational assets.
  • Provide management oversight of Workers’ Compensation, General Liability claims, and other lines as needed, in conjunction with stakeholders, brokers, carriers, and service providers, including establishing strategy, reserve and settlement authorization, and best practice compliance reviews.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to manage specialty risk claims, including Directors & Officers (D&O) and Cyber Liability. Coordinate with internal legal teams and insurance carriers to resolve coverage issues and maximize recovery under applicable policies.
  • Lead and manage the Risk Management team, overseeing strategic and operational functions including budget planning and control, workforce planning and recruitment, and the training and professional development of staff to support organizational growth and ensure corporate compliance.
