About The Position

The VP of R&D Assay Development at BD is a senior leadership role responsible for guiding a team of approximately 150 associates in the development of diagnostic assays, particularly focusing on infectious disease assays and laboratory workflows. This position plays a critical role in BD's strategy to enhance its presence in the global IVD diagnostics market, ensuring the successful development and launch of innovative molecular IVD assays. The role requires collaboration with various functional leaders and a strong understanding of diagnostic methods and technologies.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Immunology preferred.
  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in R&D, particularly in IVD assay development.
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams and manage multiple projects.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical evidence generation and IVD regulatory guidelines.
  • Proven track record of developing successful assay products and strategic relationships with partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in clinical microbiology and virology related to assay development.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles in assay development.
  • Ability to mentor and coach future leaders in R&D.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide the overall Assay R&D team in developing diagnostic assays for BD's automated diagnostic platforms.
  • Collaborate with platform leaders and peer R&D leaders to execute effective assay content strategy.
  • Focus on infectious disease assay development with an emphasis on molecular assay content.
  • Recruit and select top talent for key assay development capabilities.
  • Manage the Assay R&D teams across multiple locations, including Sparks, MD, Quebec City, CAN, and San Diego, CA.
  • Assess and acquire technologies and novel assay content through partnerships and collaborations.
  • Coordinate with Systems Development to enable world-class IVD instrumentation and workflows.
  • Perform strategic assessments of external technologies for potential partnerships and licensing.
