About The Position

The VP, Portfolio and Underwriting sets and maintains the organization’s credit culture while leading the underwriting of all new business transactions. The role develops and implements credit origination practices grounded in internal and external data, Program Standards, and industry regulations. This leader oversees underwriting and portfolio teams responsible for transaction evaluation, customer monitoring, risk rating, portfolio exposure analysis, and performance reporting. The VP also partners cross‑functionally with legal, operations, and other business units, contributes to workout strategies, and is accountable for training and developing a high‑performing underwriting and portfolio team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and work experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Typically 12+ years with bachelor's or equivalent.
  • Ability to effectively lead others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.
  • The ability to partner and influence at various levels, both internally and externally.
  • Alternative Energy Portfolio, Underwriting or Asset Management experience
  • Prior people leadership

Nice To Haves

  • Prior OCC regulated bank experience
  • 10+ years of interdisciplinary commercial finance experience (Alternative Energy, C&I, CRE)
  • Experience leading several, cross-functional teams with an emphasis on Alternative Energy

Responsibilities

  • Oversees day‑to‑day operations of the Underwriting & Portfolio teams, including all Account Executives and Commercial Underwriters.
  • Performs full managerial duties, including hiring, performance evaluations, coaching, discipline, and staff development.
  • Ensures prudent, efficient underwriting by reviewing credit narratives and approving transactions within delegated authority limits.
  • Manages department‑level reporting exceptions and establish debtor credit limits exceeding individual approval authority.
  • Maintains compliance with credit quality standards, including revenue targets, funding ratios, approval ratios, and portfolio performance metrics.
  • Manages credit origination scorecards and approval authorization levels.
  • Develops, documents, and maintains departmental policies and procedures; ensure periodic reviews and proper application of risk ratings.
  • Utilizes CID and related systems to guide and oversee all facets of the underwriting process.
  • Collaborates with BDOs and Revenue leaders to structure proposal letters and provide final approval for all proposals issued; support training of BDOs alongside the Revenue leadership team.
  • Partners with Revenue leadership to support sales alignment and funding objectives.
  • Works with Collections, Asset Management, and Legal to develop strategies for resolving distressed, delinquent, or troubled accounts.
  • Collaborates with the Data Analytics team to develop portfolio reporting, monitor origination trends, and refine credit origination metrics.
  • Coordinates responses to internal and external auditor requests and ensure compliance with documentation and reporting requirements.
