About The Position

The Vice President, Communications leads NAB’s communications function, shaping and executing media relations strategies that advance the association’s advocacy priorities before Congress and the Federal Communications Commission. This role serves as a trusted advisor to NAB leadership, including the Chief of Staff and CEO, and acts as the primary spokesperson with policy, trade, and national media on issues impacting the broadcast industry. This is a high-impact role for a politically savvy communicator who thrives in fast-moving environments, has a strong reporter network and knows how to shape narratives that influence policymakers, media and public opinion. The VP, Communications plays a critical role in elevating NAB’s voice, strengthening its reputation, and ensuring consistent, compelling messaging across traditional media, social platforms, and key public-facing moments. Public Affairs at NAB sits at the forefront of policy, media, and public discourse. We work in close partnership with Government Relations, Legal and Regulatory Affairs to translate complex policy and regulatory issues into clear, credible, and persuasive narratives for policymakers, the press, and the public. Our work is fast-paced and highly visible. As Vice President, Communications, you will help define NAB’s public voice, guide advocacy messaging at pivotal moments, and ensure the broadcast industry’s perspective is heard, understood, and respected at the highest levels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of communications, media relations, or related experience.
  • Proven experience developing media strategy in support of federal government advocacy.
  • Strong strategic vision and judgment in advocacy communications.
  • Excellent leadership, writing, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus, mentor staff, and lead teams with intention.
  • Ability to remain calm, decisive, and effective in fast-moving or crisis situations.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently; a self-initiator, versatile and assumes risk with responsibility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence engaging with senior leaders, policymakers, and the media.
  • Comfort using AI tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, content creation, analysis, and decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree.
  • Working knowledge of Capitol Hill and the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Prior experience on Capitol Hill and/or within a federal agency.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Public Affairs, Government Relations, Legal and Regulatory Affairs teams to develop and implement proactive media relations strategies. Works to bolster advocacy efforts before Congress and the FCC that impact the broadcast industry.
  • Serve as NAB’s primary media spokesperson on policy and regulatory issues affecting the broadcast industry.
  • Serve as an advisor to the CEO on media relations engagement and brand building.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key journalists and national reporters covering broadcasting, telecommunications, Congress, and the FCC.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with reporters regarding NAB’s advocacy priorities and policy positions.
  • Prepare NAB executives and designated surrogates for media engagements, including press briefings and on-the-record interviews.
  • Oversee press outreach and media strategy for NAB events, including the State Leadership Conference and Service to America Awards.
  • Collaborate with Global Connections and Events marketing and press teams to coordinate media efforts for NAB Show and NAB Show New York.
  • Set strategic direction for NAB’s social media presence, guiding advocacy messaging and ensuring timely, thoughtful engagement on policy issues.
  • Maintain an active personal social media presence to engage with reporters and amplify NAB messaging
  • Lead and mentor the communications team, fostering collaboration, professional growth, and excellence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
