While B&MI has experienced strong momentum, the company’s 2030 growth ambitions require capabilities and revenue streams that do not yet exist today. BET is responsible for finding, shaping, and launching those opportunities. The Business Expansion & Transformation (BET) team was created to accelerate B&MI’s long-term growth ambitions by identifying and developing new businesses, products, and capabilities beyond our current portfolio. BET works across internal product lines and external ecosystems to identify transformative opportunities that can drive the next generation of growth. BET operates as Mastercard’s business-creation engine. The team scans across and beyond existing P&L silos to identify transformative opportunities—new products, platforms, and capabilities that unlock value across the Mastercard ecosystem. This includes: • Building, partnering or acquiring our way in entirely new business verticals • Identifying cross-portfolio product opportunities • Creating foundational capabilities that enable businesses Mastercard could not previously build BET does not function as a research lab or innovation incubator. It is a disciplined growth engine responsible for identifying opportunities, shaping them into investable businesses, and advancing them into execution. The Vice President, Business Expansion & Transformation will be a founding leader within the BET team responsible for designing and operating Mastercard’s opportunity discovery engine. Reporting to the SVP of Business Expansion & Transformation, this role sits at the intersection of strategy, technology, and ecosystem innovation, translating emerging signals from across markets, research, and startup ecosystems into high-conviction growth opportunities. The VP will build and run the processes, tools, and networks required to continuously source, evaluate and recommend new opportunity spaces—developing clear investment theses and advancing the most promising opportunities toward development and launch. This role requires a combination of strategic thinking, venture-style opportunity evaluation, and operational execution within a complex global organization.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in corporate strategy, management consulting, venture capital, private equity, corporate venture, or new business incubation
  • Proven ability to identify, evaluate, and shape new business opportunities
  • Experience conducting early-stage opportunity diligence, including market assessment, commercial modelling, and strategic fit analysis
  • Strong strategic thinking combined with the ability to execute and drive initiatives forward
  • Comfort operating in matrixed organizations and influencing senior stakeholders
  • Excellent executive communication and storytelling skills
  • Strong curiosity about emerging technologies, new business models, and ecosystem-driven growth
  • Technical fluency and familiarity with AI and data-driven tools that accelerate research, signal detection, and insight generation

Responsibilities

  • Design and operate BET’s opportunity discovery framework, including strategic aperture definition, operating model, and processes for sourcing and evaluating opportunities.
  • Establish structured pathways that translate early signals into actionable business opportunities.
  • Develop a broad signal detection network spanning frontier research, emerging technologies, startup and venture ecosystems, regulatory developments, and industry shifts.
  • Leverage modern data and AI-enabled tools to build an Agentic engine to identify patterns, surface insights, and accelerate opportunity identification
  • Translate early signals into clear opportunity theses supported by market insights, demand validation, and commercial analysis.
  • Conduct structured exploration and early diligence to assess strategic fit, customer value, and financial viability.
  • Apply consistent evaluation frameworks to prioritize and advance high-conviction opportunities.
  • Manage a portfolio of potential growth initiatives across time horizons, risk profiles, and strategic priorities.
  • Continuously refresh the opportunity pipeline based on new insights and market developments.
  • Define maturity criteria and handoff processes for opportunities transitioning into product development or business build phases.
  • Partner closely with Product, Technology, Foundry, Strategy, Finance, and go-to-market teams to ensure successful transition and momentum.
  • Help establish BET as a scalable enterprise capability by developing repeatable tools, processes, and governance mechanisms.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a small team focused on opportunity discovery and evaluation.
