About The Position

The Vice President of Business Development provides executive leadership for the identification, evaluation and advancement of strategic growth opportunities across the health system. This role is responsible for developing and executing business development strategies that expand clinical services, strengthen market presence, and support the organization’s mission of clinical excellence, education and research.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in business, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.
  • At least 10-12 years of experience in healthcare provider or consultant setting with demonstrated leadership of strategic planning and business development efforts.
  • Effective communication, conflict resolution and problem resolution skills.
  • A “system thinking” approach with the ability to learn, adapt and react to changing organizational environment.
  • Proven track record in business development and strategic planning with the demonstrated ability to translate and communicate a plan into tactical goals.
  • Broad understanding of current issues and future challenges facing healthcare delivery systems.
  • Experience executing a physician network and population health management strategy.
  • A strong understanding of strategic alliances, partnerships and physician joint ventures.
  • Broad understanding of current issues and future challenges facing healthcare delivery systems.
  • Proven experience in identifying and developing profitable revenue streams and ability to identify target markets as areas for new business.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the capabilities required to effectively manage the health outcomes and costs of defined populations.
  • Strong operational, negotiating and strategic decision-making skills with the ability to understand markets and customers.
  • Possesses the competencies to develop plans to grow market share.

  • Experience in a large multi-specialty or single-specialty physician group practice, an Integrated Delivery Finance System (IDFS), a vertically integrated health system, or multi-site physician practice

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a System representative for mergers, acquisitions and joint venture relationships throughout the region.
  • Collaborate with System and market leadership teams to identify growth opportunities and develop strategic plans with a focus on creating clinically integrated systems of care.
  • Partner with System Medical Group (SMG) and University Health Associates (UHA) to assure a well-organized and executed integration of providers and practices into WVU Medicine.
  • Collaborate with system divisions to assure the onboarding of physicians and practices align to practice plan, compliance, HR, legal and operational policies and practices.
  • Periodically assess all components of the existing strategic and tactical plans to ensure relevance in our dynamic environment and recommend plan adjustments as needed.
  • In collaboration with regional leadership, lead efforts to identify opportunities to grow clinical services throughout primary and secondary areas. Support the mission of the organization through the identification of opportunities to provide education and research activities in appropriate affiliated sites through the service areas.
  • Understand the vision for clinical, educational, and research innovation and enhancements, and reflect those in both planning and business development. Ensure coordination and synergy of efforts throughout the organization.
  • In collaboration with the senior management of each of the organizational entities, develop broad strategies for new business opportunities and plans for increased market penetration based on market research and market trends.
  • Coordinate the development of business plans, including market analysis, pro forma financial analyses and feasibility studies for new business initiatives.
  • Promote collaboration with the Marketing Department to further integrate and align the marketing priorities into the overall organizational strategy.
  • Provide business development guidance to senior management in the various operating units to ensure that overall business development effectiveness exceeds or meets growth goals as an integrated delivery system and ensure that the competencies of individual units are leveraged across the health system so that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
  • Oversee and support efforts to establish programmatic affiliations and joint venture relationships with healthcare providers.
  • Develop and foster strong long-term business relationships with key healthcare, insurance and economic leaders in the primary and secondary markets to identify and develop creative opportunities to expand clinical presence.
  • Partner with Clinical Leadership to assist with the continued development and growth of the Signature Service Lines for WVUHS which supports a Clinically Integrated Network of care throughout the System.
