About The Position

We are seeking a Volunteer to join our team at Independent Living Systems (ILS). ILS, along with its affiliated health plans known as Florida Community Care and Florida Complete Care, is committed to promoting a higher quality of life and maximizing independence for all vulnerable populations. About the Role: As a Hospice Volunteer, you will play a vital role in providing compassionate support and comfort to patients facing life-limiting illnesses and their families. Your presence will help enhance the quality of life for those in hospice care by offering emotional, social, and practical assistance tailored to individual needs. You will work closely with the hospice interdisciplinary teams to ensure that patients receive holistic care that respects their dignity and wishes. This role requires empathy, patience, and a commitment to serving others during a profoundly sensitive time. Ultimately, your contributions will help create a supportive environment that eases the journey for patients and their loved ones.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to commit to a regular volunteer schedule as agreed upon with Independent Living Systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Previous volunteer experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated empathy and sensitivity toward individuals facing end-of-life challenges.
  • Surviving family members must meet one year waiting period after patient’s death to participate in direct patient care or public relations activities
  • Successful completion of any required background checks and volunteer training programs.
  • Must have a valid Florida license, and must use personal vehicle to make home visits.
  • Mature individual, supportive of the hospice concept, comfortable with his/her own spirituality and willing to serve others in a volunteer capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in caregiving, counseling, or volunteer work in healthcare or hospice settings.
  • Basic knowledge of end-of-life care principles and hospice philosophy.
  • Ability to handle emotionally challenging situations with resilience and professionalism.
  • Multilingual abilities to support diverse patient populations.
  • Certification in CPR or first aid.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an integral member of the interdisciplinary group amid various settings: homecare; respite; inpatient, bereavement and/or administrative; office duties.
  • Participates in general orientation.
  • Serves the patient and family/caregiver under guidance of Volunteer Coordinator and Case Manager or as a part of the administrative team.
  • Serves as substitute family/caregiver in the home performing activities that the volunteer has been prepared for and has agreed to perform. The volunteer may do homemaker chores, run errands, and provide respite care as well.
  • Documents as educated and instructed maintaining confidentiality.
  • Meets all health requirements set by Independent Living Systems.
  • Provides availability on a regular basis and/or keeping with the patient and family/caregiver needs.
  • Participates in volunteer support groups and/or educational in-services.
  • Maintains open communication and reports regularly to the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Assignment of other duties (as needed) directed by the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Participates in quality assessment performance improvement teams and activities.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary group meetings, as appropriate.
