We are seeking an experienced leader with interpersonal skills, volunteer leadership background and trailwork / outdoor recreation background to work as a Volunteer Crew Leader across all of AMC’s trail volunteer programs. Although this position works closely with the North Country Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor, this is a very autonomous position, requiring a high level of responsibility, sound decision making, and proactive communication. This position is responsible for leading days of trail stewardship with a variety of groups, including youth and adults, and while based in NH, this position travels regularly to sites in MA, NH and ME. This is an extended seasonal position running from early March 2026 to the end of October 2026 with adaptability around start and end dates including part-time remote work initially with goal of on-site at the beginning of May 2026. Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Experience in trail maintenance and construction
  • Experience spending extended periods of time outdoors
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions and maintain strong decision-making skills
  • Ability to set goals, prioritize tasks, and delegate roles to a group
  • Basic competency with Excel, Outlook, Word, and other Microsoft products
  • Strong self-motivation and communication skills
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and clear driving record (driving record check will be performed)
  • Clear a criminal background check (conducted by AMC human resources department)
  • Must be able to carry trail tools, supplies and other necessities in the rugged White Mountains and beyond

Responsibilities

  • Work with youths (JAG or other) in a mentoring and support capacity in the field
  • Support the Adopt-A-Trail Program with field excursions, training and logistics
  • Support the Sign program with field work and verification activities
  • Train and lead groups of volunteers on trail work project days, including Chapter events, Custom Crew programs for corporate groups, youth groups, etc.
  • Occasionally provide field support for AMC’s Professional Trail Crew
  • Work with Program Supervisor and other AMC staff to coordinate trail projects, daily logistics, supply needs, and maintain AMC trail work standards.
  • Work with project partners at Federal and State levels in a professional and timely manner, communicating by email, telephone and in person.
  • Assist with maintenance of tools, equipment and facility as needed
  • Collect and compile accurate and thorough project reports and safety forms from crews weekly.
  • Assist with program registration tracking and pre-event communication.
  • Report any relevant notes, questions, or requests to the Program Supervisor promptly.
  • Drive 12-passenger vans as needed
