About The Position

The Volunteer Coordinator supports the organization’s volunteer program by developing and implementing creative strategies to recruit, train, and engage volunteers. This role works closely with teams across the organization and community partners to build meaningful volunteer opportunities and ensure an exceptional experience for all participants. The Volunteer Coordinator also represents the Houston Humane Society in the community, fostering relationships that inspire service and promote volunteerism among diverse groups.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
Valid driver’s license required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management abilities.
Proficient in data entry, recordkeeping, and learning new software systems.
Positive, team-oriented attitude with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Comfortable handling and teaching safe handling of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals.
Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting (up to 30 lbs), walking, and standing for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Flexible and adaptable; able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
Collaborative and supportive in a fast-paced, team environment.
Maintains confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Represents the Houston Humane Society with integrity and compassion.
Respects organizational structure and follows proper reporting procedures.

Responsibilities

Supports the Houston Humane Society’s mission by coordinating meaningful volunteer opportunities that strengthen the bond between people and animals.
Anticipates volunteer needs and provides materials, processes and procedures that ensure a positive and rewarding experience for every volunteer.
Assists with the development and facilitation of volunteer training sessions to promote safe animal handling, compassionate care, and strong community engagement.
Works collaboratively with departments across the organization to align volunteer efforts with shelter operations, events, and outreach initiatives.
Helps plan and promote new volunteer opportunities that inspire individuals and corporate groups to get involved in HHS programs and events.
Serves as a friendly and knowledgeable liaison between volunteers, staff, and community partners, ensuring clear communication and meaningful connections.
Coordinates volunteer schedules and opportunities to support daily operations, events, and community outreach.
Helps track participation and impact metrics, providing input to improve volunteer programs and celebrate success stories.
Assists with creating and sharing volunteer communications, including newsletters, email updates, and social media content that highlight volunteer achievements and opportunities.
Supports recognition efforts to celebrate the dedication and compassion of HHS volunteers.
Fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects the values of kindness, service, and teamwork at the heart of the Houston Humane Society.
