The position involves coaching youth sports, focusing on creating a positive and safe learning environment where young athletes can develop sport-specific skills with proper technique. The coach will serve as a role model for both children and parents, facilitating an encouraging atmosphere that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The role requires proactive communication with parents and program coordinators, participation in pre-season meetings and training, and a commitment to the core values of the Appleton Parks & Recreation Department Youth Sports Program.

  • Create a positive and safe learning environment for youth to learn sport-specific skills.
  • Serve as a positive role model for children and parents during practices and games.
  • Facilitate a positive, encouraging practice atmosphere focused on skill development and fun.
  • Communicate program information to team parents prior to and during the season.
  • Communicate with Program Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor regarding concerns or problems.
  • Participate in scheduled pre-season coaches meetings.
  • Ensure equal playing time for all players.
  • Represent and promote the philosophy and core values of the Appleton Parks & Recreation Department Youth Sports Program.
  • Display sportsmanship and a positive attitude.
  • Work to establish and build team unity.
  • Make a difference in the lives of the youth.
  • Complete the volunteer coach application and pass a background check.
  • Attend and participate in department-sponsored pre-season coaches training.
  • Lead groups of children effectively.
  • Lead with enthusiasm, encouragement, humor, and respect.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the game and proper technique.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with other coaches, City of Appleton Employees, spectators, and the public.
  • Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
