About The Position

Responsibilities: Provide work preparatory skill development, employment obtainment and employment retention supports to a caseload of children (16+) and/or adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. Focus is on facilitating activities and opportunities through direct/indirect support for obtainment and to sustain individualized community integrated employment. Employment activities and opportunities support the Job Seekers interests, priorities, desires, abilities and talents. The right candidate will have a desire to help people author their job/career goals through self-determination and person centered planning with the support of family/friends, community partners, community employers and potentially other Medicaid and non-Medicaid supports. Vocational Specialist provide active consultation to those receiving support to children or adults living with their families, adults in supported living situations, group homes, or living independently in the community. Additional responsibilities include guiding, supporting, teaching, monitoring and building professional relationships with community partners and employers to develop employment skill learning opportunities, employment obtainment through “customize / carve out” employment and employment retention through assistance to employers and co-works to support towards long term success for the Job Seeker. Responsibilities also include working with community partners and clinical staff to increase the Job Seekers integration and independence in the community of residence. Responsible for carrying out all activities of the program/sub-unit in such a manner that fulfills CMHA-CEI’s mission, policies and procedures. Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Vocational Rehabilitation, or closely related field required.
  • Possession of an appropriate State of Michigan credential (i.e., LLBSW, LBSW, SSTR) is required or must have applied for and be able to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • One year of professional work experience with persons with developmental disabilities is required.
  • Ability to communicate accurately and effectively both in writing and verbally required.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for job related use is required.
  • Applicant must be able to manage having a flexible schedule designed around the support needs of Job Seekers.
  • Applicant should expect to adjust work schedule to accommodate intermittent evenings and weekends.
  • Employment offers for this position will be contingent upon the results of a background verification and credentialing procedure consisting of: Michigan State Police clearance check, verification of a professional license, Medicaid/Medicare verification, verification of an acceptable driving record, educational background check, and verification of an acceptable work history.
  • Must undergo and pass a Central Registry Clearance Check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment 5-panel drug screen.
