About The Position

Under general supervision, provides vocational rehabilitation services to members of the Tohono O'odham Nation with disabilities through assessment, eligibility determination, individualized action plans, career counseling and academic guidance. The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.
  • Ability to work with individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to create and present effective speeches and presentations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
  • Associate's Degree in Social Services, Education, or related field and three years' work experience in case management, vocational rehabilitation, job placement; or an equivalent combination work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides information to the community regarding eligibility and the nature and scope of vocational rehabilitation services that enhances financial independence among people with disabilities.
  • Evaluates applicants with disabilities and confers with medical and professional personnel to determine type and degree of impairment, eligibility for service, and feasibility of vocational rehabilitation; accepts or recommends acceptance of suitable candidates.
  • Develops an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) process for each eligible participant.
  • Creates culturally appropriate employment opportunities, including traditional crafts, entrepreneurial businesses, and subsistence activities.
  • Collects information concerning potential job placements and determines compatibility between job and participant based on the individual's disability.
  • Analyzes job requirements and work environments and development of written individual training and support plans; plans and arranges for applicant to study or train for job; aids applicant in obtaining medical and social services during training.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with other agencies of the Nation, schools, businesses, and other government agencies to maximize the effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation services.
  • Provides information and links to educational and employment opportunities in accordance with participant's IPE.
  • Promotes and develops job openings and places qualified applicant in employment.
  • Coordinates transportation for individuals with disabilities through collaboration with existing programs and/or services on the Nation.
  • Facilitates case management services to assigned clients and their families; participates in case staffing; maintains client record system and statistics; and facilitates counseling sessions for individuals, families and groups.
  • Develops and presents community education and outreach to increase knowledge and understanding of tribal rehabilitation programs, problems, and related issues.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
