Vocational Instructors work within the policies and practices of the Office of Correctional Education, including the implementation of only the approved curriculum. Vocational Instructors are expected to prepare instruction and assessment that is aligned with the policies and regulations of the CDCR Office of Correctional Education, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and the partner organizations and associations through which CDCR students receive trade certifications. Supervise all students in the classroom and shop and ensure students actively participate and complete assignments and course projects. While monitoring all students, provide small group instruction to small groups working on projects that relate to multiple competencies listed in the Curriculum Progress Record. Small group instruction includes explaining concepts related to trade competencies necessary for industry certification, modeling standards and examples, and challenging students to meet industry standards for quality and accuracy. Prepare students for successful completion of the performance exam after module completion so that each student earns a trade certification and program completion. Provide direct instruction to students, to include whole class, small group, and individual instruction of assigned course curriculum. Maintain classroom control and ensure students are actively engaged with assigned work and projects. Record attendance for both students and workers and follow progressive discipline procedures as it relates to student conduct, tardiness, and unexcused absences. Track student progress in a timely manner on each student's Curriculum Progress Record. Develop lesson plans directly aligned to the approved curriculum, textbooks, and industry standards. Organize and effectively teach course objectives, standards, and the requirements for successful completion. Prepare students to attain industry specific certifications. Develop lesson plans that will allow students to work independently on adopted curriculum when students are not able to access the class due to such reasons as an institutional modified program. Report to direct supervisor and clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing regarding program concerns or issues. The California Department of Corrections Rehabilitations (CDCR) Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process.
