About The Position

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Vocational Instructor for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton, Illinois. Under general supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Manager, provides occupational instruction for patients living in forensic units at the Alton Mental Health Center. Develops job leads in the community for patients, evaluates patients progress both in class and in work settings. Prepares relevant attendance and program reports.

Requirements

  • Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in the trade or occupational area for which instruction is given.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to pass Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Requires the ability to access various work sites throughout the hospital and the ability to respond to facility-wide emergencies.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry moderate loads up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of professional experience working with the practices, methods, tools and materials of food service, commercial housekeeping, horticulture, industrial print shop and/or other approved vocational programming.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience preparing reports and evaluating training progress using suitable performance measures.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience coordinating occupational instruction and preparing lesson plans.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience preparing lesson plans and using effective competency-based teaching techniques, instructional materials and media support to conduct classroom lecture, course work and laboratory projects.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience assembling equipment and organizing instructional materials and teaching aids needed for special education of the patients.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts occupational instruction to forensic patients in such areas as food service, commercial housekeeping, horticulture and industrial print shop and/or other approved vocational programming.
  • Develops job opportunities in the community utilizing job coaching and other employment support systems which will lead directly to placement of vocational patients in supported or competitive jobs.
  • Develops program and patient evaluative measures and reports.
  • Organizes and stores instructional materials to ensure a systematic and safe presentation.
  • Assists professional staff in the design and development of program courses.
  • Collects data required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Education for Employment (EFE) 580 system to record patients’ progress.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
