About The Position

A Vocational Instructor for Concrete-Construction, also known as a concrete instructor or vocational trade instructor, is responsible for educating employees during the onboarding process or on ongoing training for the skills and knowledge that is needed for working at Steed in concrete construction and finishing jobs. This role combines classroom theory with hands-on experience and practice in a workshop setting. The goal is to prepare new and existing employees during their onboarding process to learn the primary skills needed to become a valuable and productive team member for one of the Steed construction teams, and to refresh or train new or advance trade or product skills and best practices to existing employees, as needed. We are seeking an experienced vocational instructor or a skilled professional to join our team as an Instructor at our headquarter in Helena, Montana. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned expert, perhaps nearing retirement, who is passionate about passing on their skills and best practices, shaping the next generation of concrete technicians, finishers, and construction carpenters. Job Summary The Vocational Instructor delivers educational programs on concrete-related topics, such as site preparation, mix designs, forming, pouring, finishing, and curing. The instructor oversees both classroom and practical training, ensuring employees learn proper techniques, follow safety protocols, and use relevant tools and equipment correctly. A successful Vocational Instructor will have significant vocational or field experience and a passion for mentoring the next generation of construction professionals.

Requirements

  • Experience: Typically, 5 to 10+ years of professional experience in vocational instruction, concrete construction, or a related field, is ideal. Prior teaching qualifications is a plus but not mandatory. Candidate needs to be comfortable to instruct and educate individuals and groups.
  • Technical expertise preferred: Demonstrated expertise in forming, pouring, and finishing concrete slabs and columns. Proficiency in rebar reinforcement, including tying rebar and understanding placement requirements. Extensive knowledge of concrete mixes, tools, and finishing techniques.
  • Educational background: Prior teaching, training, or leadership experience is a plus but not required. Preference is given to candidates holding an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field like vocational teaching or construction management.
  • Teaching ability: Patience and a strong desire to mentor and guide aspiring tradespeople. Willing to be a mentor to others and lead by example. The candidate must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Safety knowledge: A basic understanding of OSHA and general construction safety standards is essential or the willingness to learn the OSHA standards for the purpose of educating employees for safety practices and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum development: Assist with delivering hands-on instructional programs basic and in modern concrete techniques, from formwork to finishing.
  • Instruction: Deliver comprehensive classroom and hands-on training to Steed employees, teaching skills such as blueprint reading, formwork, rebar tying, and various finishing techniques, as well as teaching the use of equipment specific to the trade, including mixed designs, power trowels, and rebar tools. Provide one-on-one instruction and guidance to employees with varying skill levels. Create lesson plans and evaluate employee progress, providing constructive feedback and support.
  • Safety leadership: Enforce strict safety protocols in the workshop and during all practical exercises. Work with the safety manager and educate employees on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and the safe operation of all tools and equipment, including power trowels, saws, and basic concrete mixing. Instruct on the principles of consolidation of concrete, pouring, finishing, and curing for various applications.
  • Employee skill assessment: Evaluate employee performance through exams, assignments, and practical skills assessments. Provide constructive feedback to help employees improve and meet learning objectives.
  • Training Workshop management: Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked training workshop. Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and repair of all equipment and tools.
  • Record-keeping: Manage employee attendance and progress reports in accordance with Steed policies.
  • Professional development: Stay current with new technologies, materials, and techniques in the concrete and construction industries by attending vendor seminars, workshops, and trade association meetings.
  • Mentorship: Advise and mentor employees on career opportunities at Steed, their professional development, and the importance of a strong work ethic.
  • Industry engagement: Collaborate with industry partners to secure guest speakers, organize site visits, and align the program with workforce needs.
