About The Position

Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) serves 5,300 students in 11 schools and employs nearly 1000 people. This is an exciting time of change and transformation at HPS. Although there are many strengths within the District and many students graduate college and career ready, last year, HPS was placed in receivership by the State of Massachusetts, due to chronically struggling performance well below the state average. The State appointed Dr. Stephen Zrike, a seasoned Massachusetts educator, as Receiver, to lead this exciting turnaround effort, which includes significant autonomy and flexibility from the traditional school system. Knowledge of the competencies and skills required of students in specific vocational technical areas is essential. The candidate will have an understanding of curriculum development, students learning styles and possess the ability to work with all students in assisting the technical instructor in delivering quality programming to prepare the students to meet the demands of the modern workplace. Candidate will translate and assist with the communication with ELL students, primarily Spanish speaking students.

Requirements

  • Experience in the workplace in specific vocational technical training areas (Licensed tradesperson preferred).
  • Candidate should be motivated to begin the process towards vocational certification; however certification is not a requirement for the position.
  • Characteristics which clearly incorporate a team concept and indicate ability to relate positively to high school students and colleagues.
  • Possess personal and professional history which is exemplary and supported with references.
  • Knowledge of shop safety, hand tools, power tools and equipment for specified shop areas required.
  • The candidate must be able to inspire excellence, and prepare the students for social responsibility, employment, and postsecondary education in order to effectively meet our mission with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

  • Strength in Graphic Communications and Horticulture a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the daily planning of shop projects and related instruction.
  • Monitors the activities of small groups of students.
  • Shares industry experience with students and staff.
  • Monitors students in completing shop tasks while helping them to develop an attitude of personal and professional excellence.
  • Assists the vocational technical instructor(s) in accommodating the special needs of individual students.
  • Assists in the maintenance of individual student records.
  • Helps maintain discipline under supervision of the teacher.
  • Assists the vocational technical instructor(s) in maintaining a safe, clean and professional work environment.
  • Assists the vocational technical instructor(s) with analyzing data to develop appropriate accommodations to meet the needs of all students.
  • Assists the vocational technical instructor(s) in breaking down CTE competencies, tasks and projects for diverse learners.
