About The Position

VM Data Consultant ROLE We need an experienced VM Data Consultant at the New York City Department of Social Services (DSS). DSS enhances the quality of life for all New Yorkers by providing temporary assistance to eligible individuals and families with social service and economic needs, supported by IT Services (ITS) which operates the critical technology infrastructure behind the agency’s programs. DSS is currently executing a large-scale Data Center Co-location and Migration Project to consolidate multiple data centers into a new facility at 11 MetroTech in Brooklyn, replacing end-of-life infrastructure and mitigating risk of service disruption to agency operations. In this role, you will design and configure VMware HCX, vCenter, and NSX components at source and target sites, perform wave-based VM migrations, track migration performance and error handling, and coordinate phased migration schedules across all application tiers and environments. Requirements

  • 4 years' experience Installing, configuring, upgrading, and managing VMware vSphere, ESXi hosts, VXRAIL and vCenter Servers.
  • 4 years' experience Creating and managing virtual machines (VMs), managing resource allocation, and troubleshooting performance issues.
  • 4 years' experience Configuring and maintaining virtual networks (vSwitch, NSX) and storage (vSAN, SAN, NAS).
  • 4 years' experience with Applying patches, updates, and upgrades to ESXi hosts, VXRAIL and vCenter.
  • Implementing security, such as Role-Based Access Controls (RBAC) and Monitoring health system using tools like VROPs, NetIM
  • Developing scripts using PowerShell/PowerCLI or Python to automate routine tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field – preferred

Responsibilities

  • Design and configure VMware HCX, vCenter, and NSX components at both source and target sites.
  • Perform wave-based VM migrations using appropriate HCX mobility types (vMotion, RAV, etc.).
  • Track migration performance, error handling, and validate post-migration performance.
  • Coordinate phased migration schedule across all application tiers and environments.
  • Interface regularly with: Application owners (pre/post testing, downtime planning) Network engineers (firewall rules, routing, L2 extensions) Backup team (freeze windows, integration testing).
  • Maintain runbooks, status updates, issue logs, and executive summaries.
