About The Position

Mercer University School of Medicine is seeking a highly qualified Vivarium Director and Research Lab Manager on the Columbus, GA campus.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of prior laboratory experience which must include work with animals.
  • Candidates with a master's degree and two years of the same experience will also be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare various reports.
  • Ability to learn and apply basic principles and practices of laboratory animal care and facility maintenance.
  • Ability to keep written records of animal health, daily tasks, and facility conditions.
  • Ability to learn and abide by the IACUC, OLAW, and USDA regulations as they apply to a laboratory animal vivarium.
  • Ability to write and follow standard operating procedures and protocols for the vivarium and research laboratory.
  • Ability to work with disinfectants, germicides, and cleaning agents commonly used in the animal vivarium.
  • Ability to work on rotating weekends and holidays in the animal vivarium.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain vivarium and research laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and perform all activities within the animal vivarium on the Columbus campus, including all aspects of animal husbandry and care.
  • Responsible for all reporting requirements associated with IACUC, OLAW, and USDA oversight.
  • Ensure creation, maintenance of, and adherence to standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • Work with the Chair or Vice-Chair of the department to manage and maintain the research laboratory facilities.
  • Maintain and ensure proper and safe use of departmental equipment.
  • Monitor adherence to departmental policies regarding conducting research, use of resources, handling and disposal of research materials.
  • Monitor departmental usage of laboratory supplies, assist in ordering supplies, and advise on current and future equipment needs.
