Position Overview: The VITA Tax Preparer supports Branches’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program by preparing accurate and high-quality tax returns for low- to moderate-income individuals and families. The Tax Preparer helps ensure that clients receive all eligible tax credits and refunds while providing a positive, respectful, and confidential service experience. This is a temporary role for 4 months; January to April.

Requirements

• IRS Advance VITA/TCE Certification (required, may be obtained through Branches).
• Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
• Basic computer literacy; experience with TaxSlayer is helpful but not required.
• Commitment to Branches’ mission and to providing equitable, high-quality service to all clients.

Responsibilities

• Prepare federal and state tax returns using IRS-approved software (TaxSlayer).
• Interview clients to ensure accurate and complete tax return information.
• Identify tax credits and deductions that benefit clients (e.g., Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit).
• Review returns with clients, answer basic questions, and ensure client understanding.
• Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive client information.
• Collaborate with the Site Coordinator and other volunteers to maintain a smooth site workflow.
• Participate in required training and maintain IRS certification (Basic or Advanced level). This training is facilitated by Branches.
• Provide excellent customer service that aligns with Branches’ Values of Professionalism, ComPassion and Collaboration.
