The VM Designer plays a key role in driving Ulta Beauty's in-store brand presence by developing visually compelling creative concepts for internal pitches and store updates. This position is responsible for bringing brand stories to life in a retail setting, translating brand DNA into immersive, shoppable environments. The ideal candidate is highly creative, detail-oriented, and stays current on industry and retail design trends. They are fluent in rendering visual concepts and adept at designing across various formats with consistency and a deep understanding of Ulta Beauty's retail environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Interior Design, Visual Merchandising, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in visual merchandising design, preferably in a retail environment.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and 3D rendering tools such as SketchUp or Cinema 4D.
  • Strong conceptual and visual storytelling skills with an eye for layout, color, and typography.
  • Ability to interpret and translate brand aesthetics into a three-dimensional retail environment.
  • Solid understanding of fixture design, retail space planning, and shopper behavior.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and adapt in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Create renderings and visual materials for brand pitches and updates.
  • Translate brand DNA into cohesive, visually compelling in-store presentations aligned with Ulta Beauty's aesthetic and merchandising strategy.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with visual merchandising, store design, marketing, and merchant teams to ensure design intent aligns with business goals.
  • Stay up to date on retail and visual merchandising trends to inform and inspire design solutions.
  • Support execution of store presentation strategies that elevate the guest experience and reinforce brand identity.
  • Develop scalable design concepts for various store formats and fixture types.
  • Present ideas and design rationale to key stakeholders, incorporating feedback to refine deliverables.
  • Assist with organizing and archiving design assets and presentation materials.
  • Support special projects, pilot programs, or new store formats as needed.
  • Ability to present to complex concepts to leadership in written and verbal formats.
  • Participate in store visits and competitive shop analyses to inform creative direction.
