About The Position

El Puente seeks a dynamic, detailed oriented and committed EVisual Arts Facilitator to join El Puente’s team. This position reports to the Program Director and will work with the executive team along with El Puente staff, members and community. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, team-oriented environment, and is motivated by the opportunity to create new innovative ways of educating youth. They will also have passion for social justice and will understand how movement building is served by a strong educational foundation. Who we are: Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice. Our mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model, as a high impact youth and community development organization. El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers, and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico and beyond, El Puente remains at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates /impacts social policy locally and nationally. As a staff member of El Puente, the Education Coordinator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy and principles of the organization.

Requirements

  • Experience in drafting lesson plans and curriculum
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to youth and community development, organizing and movement building for peace and justice.
  • Strong management and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to handle multiple tasks independently, as well as in teams.
  • Spanish proficiency desired

Responsibilities

  • Teach foundations/techniques of fine arts inclusive of drawing, painting, and sculpture
  • Implement curricula and activities.
  • Design curriculum that integrates arts/crafts techniques and theme-based projects with seasonal or event-related themes.
  • Coordinate exhibition pieces for the end of the summer showcase, and/or seasonal, theme-based events.
  • Attend regular staff and supervision meetings and participate in staff development.
  • Keep accurate records of youth attendance.
  • Work with staff to mentor and support youth, as well as to create a safe, supervised, and welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate with other artists and facilitators within and across El Puente programs on community projects or participate in larger El Puente events.
  • Communicate effectively with kids, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to effectively support and implement a planned curriculum.
  • Child-friendly personality.
  • Have ready the necessary materials for the class in advance.
  • Delegate responsibilities to classroom assistants.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all members.
  • Create reports for administrators as needed (materials needed, Behavior reports, etc)
  • Be aware and observant in the classroom.
