Visual Arts Exhibit Specialist

About the position

The Exhibit Specialist (Visual Arts) provides specialized technical expertise in areas such as lighting, carpentry, exhibit design, or competitive entry computer software. This is a seasonal/temporary position not to exceed 122 days. The role involves assisting in the planning, design, maintenance, and installation of specialized exhibit work, operating various tools and equipment, and providing leadership to department employees. The specialist will also support the department supervisor in purchasing supplies, track tools and equipment, and maintain records specific to job duties. Customer service is a key component, as the specialist will provide information to guests about exhibits and events.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning, design, maintenance, and installation of specialized exhibit work in areas such as lighting, carpentry, and exhibit displays.
• Operate special tools and equipment to create/build exhibit elements/features.
• Provide leadership to department employees to complete assigned projects safely and timely.
• Support the department supervisor in purchasing needed supplies.
• Keep track of tools, supplies, and equipment used by Exhibit staff.
• Collaborate with the supervisor on prioritizing department tasks.
• Organize job duties to keep projects on task and on time.
• Maintain files, receipts, and records specific to job duties.
• Safeguard exhibit buildings and support maintenance of exhibits.
• Dispatch building service calls using hand-held radio.
• Provide clerical support for competitive entries.
• Exhibit top-notch customer service to guests.
• Prepare and pack exhibit-related structures for storage post-event.
• Dismantle competitive exhibits and assist exhibitors during pick-up times.
• Assist with compiling and entry of data for post-fair reports.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Previous experience in lighting, carpentry, exhibit design, or competitive entry computer software.
• Working knowledge of tools and safety guidelines for technical fields.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Strong organizational and teamwork skills.
• Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs.
• Ability to work outside normal business hours as needed.
• Previous experience working with the public.
• Good verbal communication skills.
• Enthusiastic and able to handle occasional stressful situations.
• Experience leading others in a project setting preferred.
• Ability to safely lift objects up to 50 lbs.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of art or craft media.
• Experience or college coursework in gallery, exhibition, or art.
• Valid California Driver's license.
• Familiarity with the layout and facilities of the OC Fair & Event Center.
• Experience with heavy equipment such as forklift or scissor lift.

Benefits

• Seasonal/temporary position with a pay rate of $19.50 per hour.
