About The Position

The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department is looking to hire a Visiting Instructor for the pillar lab courses and an additional course. The details of the position is as follows: Course Instruction (75%25) · Sole instructor for four pillar lab courses. · Co-instructor for one course. · Design course materials to provide "hands-on" equipment-based experience to complement and enhance student learning. · Design and organize course materials using the Canvas platform. · Develop and present opening lectures for each session to keep students on track with semester progress, highlight fundamental pillar class principles, and drive understanding of experimental and analytical requirements. · Develop specific requirements for three student team deliverables to facilitate progressive learning of fundamental concepts throughout the semester: – Research Plan Presentation (early semester) – Progress Report (mid-semester) – Final Report (end semester) · Grade and provide detailed feedback for the RPP presentations as well as written Progress and Final Reports to ensure student understanding of key experimental and analytical concepts and drive improvement in technical writing and formatting skills. · Drive improvement in student teamwork & leadership skills through a specific teamwork focused activity. Develop and utilize individual scorecards and the CATME Peer Evaluation system to track individual performance, as well as drive improvement in the understanding of design of experiment (D.O.E.) concepts and practices in respect to Pillars courses. · Meet with students on a flexible as-needed basis to answer all questions, ensure understanding of fundamental concepts, and promote self-confidence to facilitate individual student learning and success. · Develop supplemental bonus activities to increase student interest and improve understanding of industrial applications of key process operations. · Compile and submit individual student grades based on team scores for three deliverables: assessment through direct observation, CATME peer review feedback. · Evaluate results at the conclusion of each course and identify continuous improvement opportunities for future semesters. Undergraduate Teaching Lab Facility (20%25) · Maintenance, calibration, repair, and modification of a variety of experimental systems used for instruction in the five pillar lab courses. · Devise and test new and/or modified experimental objectives with existing equipment to expand the technical scope of student lab projects and increase the technical breadth of knowledge gained by the students. · Identify, obtain approval to procure, and commission new equipment to replace aging/obsolete systems and/or expand the scope of equipment offerings to complement pillar course concepts. · Select, order, and maintain an inventory of equipment, parts, materials, and supplies required for operation of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory. · Ensure compliance with EHS safety requirements & reporting. ABET Compliance (5%25) · Facilitate student development against three specific ABET Student Outcomes. · Identify specific activities and relevant metrics to assess performance against each ABET Student Outcomes for each pillar lab course. · Complete ABET focused Direct Assessments for each course at the conclusion of the semester. · Compile required documentation for internal panel reviews (every three years) and external ABET auditor review (every six years). · Host the internal panel team to ensure understanding of the Teaching Laboratory/Pillar Lab Course capabilities and student activities/performance. · Host the external ABET auditor to ensure understanding of the Teaching Laboratory/Pillar Lab Course capabilities and student activities/performance.

Requirements

  • MS in Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years experience in working with undergraduate students in a Laboratory setting.
  • 5+ years experience in working in a teaching environment.
