Midwestern University (MWU) is excited to offer a one-year internship focused on Small Animal Internal Medicine. This program is intended to provide intensive clinical training and faculty mentorship to prepare the intern for the rigors of an internal medicine residency. The Midwestern University Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110,000 sq. ft. building contains state-of-the-art surgical, dental, and intensive care facilities, and is equipped with digital radiography, fluoroscopy, C-arm, 32-slice CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and arthroscopy facilities. Additional services include dialysis medicine, therapeutic plasma exchange and a blood bank. The intern will work primarily with Drs. Jared Jaffey and Laura Rayhel. The internal medicine service runs five days per week under the supervision of one of these faculty members, on an alternating basis. The IM specialty intern can expect to see approximately 4 outpatient cases per day, covering a wide range of possible internal medicine case subtypes. Additionally, the IM intern will manage selected inpatient transfers from the Urgent Care, Primary Care, and Surgery Services, including (but not limit to): immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, acute kidney injury, acute pancreatitis, etc. The intern will work with close and individualized supervision from the on-clinics faculty member. There are no evening, overnight, or weekend on-call responsibilities or emergency receiving duties required. Elective rotations in other specialty areas are possible if specifically requested. The IM intern will receive training in and primarily perform a variety of minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures, including gastroduodenoscopy, gastric foreign body retrieval, ileocolonoscopy, cystoscopy, laser ablation of ectopic ureters, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy/bronchoalveolar lavage, arthrocentesis, bone marrow sampling, enteral feeding tube placement, and more. On a case-by-case basis, MWU is outfitted to perform hemodialysis, therapeutic plasma exchange, and tracheal stenting. The internal medicine service is also responsible for providing abdominal, thoracic, and cervical ultrasonography services and fine needle aspirate procedures for its own patients and patients on other services, so on-the-job, hands-on, and frequent training in sonography will also be provided. Midwestern University is a private, not-for-profit organization that provides graduate and professional education in the health sciences. More than 6,200 full-time students are enrolled in graduate programs in osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nurse anesthesia, cardiovascular perfusion, podiatry, optometry, clinical psychology, speech language pathology, and biomedical sciences.
